The text consists of two poems: "In the garden of Abdullah", a poetic novelette of 209 numbered 8-line stanzas written in unrhymed trochaic tetrameter, preceded by a "dramatis personae" and a 4-leaf introduction, "By the way", an account of the poem's origin in conversations with "Prince Ibrahim Hassan, first cousin of the then Khediv of Egypt", which took place "[w]hen this century was a year old, at the country seat of an English gentleman near Melton Mowbrey [i.e. Mowbray]"; and "The wandering Beduin [sic] in the desert watches", consisting of 14 numbered 12-line stanzas (I-XIV), each containing three iambic tetrameter a/b/a/b quatrains.
