A NATO workshop on "The Properties of Impurity States in Semiconductor Superlattices" was held at the University of Essex, Colchester, United Kingdom, from September 7 to 11, 1987. Doped semiconductor superlattices not only provide a unique opportunity for studying low dimensional electronic behavior, they can also be custom-designed to exhibit many other fascinating el~ctronic properties. The possibility of using these materials for new and novel devices has further induced many astonishing advances, especially in recent years. The purpose of this workshop was to review both advances in the state of the art and recent results in various areas of semiconductor superlattice research, including: (i) growth and characterization techniques, (ii) deep and shallow im purity states, (iii) quantum well states, and (iv) two-dimensional conduction and other novel electronic properties. This volume consists of all the papers presented at the workshop. Chapters 1-6 are concerned with growth and characterization techniques for superlattice semiconductors. The question of a-layer is also discussed in this section. Chapters 7-15 contain a discussion of various aspects of the impurity states. Chapters 16- 22 are devoted to quantum well states. Finally, two-dimensional conduction and other electronic properties are described in chapters 23-26.

Since the introduction of quantum mechanics, the general theory of solid state physics has developed very rapidly. To date, a number of good textbooks on general solid state physics have been written. However, research in solid state physics has become highly specialized and undertaken in narrow fields. There is thus a great need for elementary textbooks that deal in detail with the study of solids in a particular field in order to give students basic knowledge in that field. Metallic solids with an impurity, generally called alloys, are of immense importance from both fundamental and technological points of view. The pioneering work of Bloember gen and Rowland (1953) gave considerable impetus to the study of the electronic structure of metallic alloys. Serious theoretical study in this field started in 1960 and, during the last two decades, considerable success in understanding the electronic structure of simple metal alloys has been achieved. Nonetheless the theoretical study of dilute alloys of transition metals is still in its infancy. At present there are few review articles and original research papers that examine the role of an impurity with respect to the electronic structure and properties of metallic alloys. Because of the absence of an elementary textbook that presents a comprehensive account of different aspects of the electronic structure of metallic alloys, I have written this elementary textbook on the theory of the electronic structure of metallic alloys.

Impurity and Gender in the Hebrew Bible explores the role of female blood in the Hebrew Bible and considers its theological implications for future understandings of purity and impurity in the Jewish religion. Influenced by the work of Jonathan Klawans (Sin and Impurity in Ancient Judaism), and using the categories of ritual and moral impurities, this book analyzes the way in which these categories intersect with women and with the impurity of female blood, and reads the biblical foundations of purity and blood taboos with a feminist lens. Ultimately, the purpose of this book is to understand the intersection between impurity and gender, figuratively and non-figuratively, in the Hebrew Bible. Goldstein traces this intersection from the years 1000 BCE-250 BCE and ends with a consideration of female impurity in the literature of Qumran.
