Book Description
The labor market has changed dramatically in recent decades. In the 1980s an average of 2 million workers each year lost their jobs because of the increasingly global economy, rapid advances in technology, and corporate downsizing. During the same period, immigration increased and Congress passed welfare reform legislation that required many more Americans to join the workforce. Legislators have looked closely at federal job training programs in recent years, and in 1998 passed the two major acts mandating change. In Improving the Odds, experts on labor policy explore the effects of current programs on earnings and employment, recommend improvements in programs, and assess the methodologies used to measure their effectiveness. The editors offer several strategies to help policymakers design programs that fulfill the promise of keeping workers out of poverty. Contents: -Publicly Funded Training in a Changing Labour Market (Burt S. Barnow and Christopher T. King) -The Economic, Demographic, and Social Context of Future Employment and Training Programs (Frank Bennici, Steven Mangum, and A ndrew M. Sum) -Welfare Employment Programs: Impacts and Cost-Effectiveness of Employment and Training Activities (Lisa Plimpton and Demetra Smith Nightingale) -The Impact of Job Training Partnership Act Programs for Adult Welfare Recipients (Jodi Nudelman) -Training Success Stories for Adults and Out-of-School Youth: A Tale of Two States (Christopher T. King, with Jerome A. Olson, Leslie O. Lawson, Charles E. Trott, and John Baj) -Employment and Training Programs for Out-of-School Youth: Past Effects and Lessons for the Future (Robert I. Lerman) -Customized Training for Employers: Training People for Jobs That Exist and Employers Who Want to Hire Them (Kellie Isbell, John Trutko, and vBurt S. Robins) -Reflections on Training Policies and Programs (Garth L. Mangum) -Strategies for Improving the Odds (Burt S. Barnow and Christopher T. King).

Book Description
Have you ever noticed that you talk about luck every day of your life? Luck is your silent companion, sometimes bringing awesome parking spaces, a chance meeting with a new love interest, or a small windfall. Most of the time you probably don’t even pay attention to luck. Chances are, you only really think about luck when you buy a lottery ticket or participate in a contest. Luck is so much more than that. If you take steps to live longer by eating right and exercising, why wouldn’t you also take similar steps to improve your good fortune? Barrie Dolnick and Anthony Davidson asked themselves this very question, and set out to study luck and decipher how it works. In this insightful and engaging book, they share the secrets they’ve uncovered so you can use luck more effectively in your day-to-day life. Where does luck originate? Does one need to be “born lucky” in order to be lucky? Answering these and many other pressing questions, Dolnick and Davidson investigate both ancient and scientific approaches to luck. From early man to famous rationalists, luck has been prayed for, played with, and courted. You’ll learn how ancient practices such as the I Ching, astrology, tarot, and numerology have been used to understand luck, and how great mathematicians studied luck–some guided by their own interest in gambling. Every- one wants to be lucky. Once you know the fundamentals of luck, the authors take you through your own Personal Luck Profile so that you can use this wisdom and try your luck. People do a lot of weird things to improve their luck–and now you can make smart choices and informed decisions about how to play with yours.

Book Description
This landmark volume commemorates the fortieth anniversary of the Children’s Defense Fund, which has been an uncompromising champion of American youth for all of those years. Yet the book looks not to the past but at our current circumstances—and at the challenges we must meet now and in the future on behalf of our young people. The book examines critical issues—prenatal and infant health and development, early child care and education, school reform, the achievement gap, vulnerable children, juvenile justice, and child poverty—and highlights crucial practical and policy measures we need to consider and undertake if we are to better serve American children. An invaluable survey of the conditions facing American youth—and a call to action at the local, state, and national levels—Improving the Odds for America’s Children is an urgent, informative, and inspired volume that addresses shortcomings and challenges we cannot afford to ignore. Book Description
Many African American males are headed down the wrong paths in school and society, but that's mostly because we as a community do not understand the challenges they face. In this guide, Dr. Alfred Brinkley, an African American studies scholar and alternative school administrator, explores how to boost the odds of success for at-risk, African American males. He focuses on helping teachers, parents, and students to promote a lifetime love of reading; narrow the achievement gap; encourage self-esteem and intrinsic motivation; and hone parenting and mentoring skills. Leaving your comfort zone and learning why this group of students needs support can better equip you to establish a relationship based on mutual respect. Educating, inspiring, and motivating at-risk African American males requires a support system that can prepare them to succeed. Students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community leaders can begin to do their part with Courageous Expectations.

Book Description
Are you looking for actionable things that you can do to help your cancer treatment, or possibly prevent cancer in the first place? Something with scientific evidence that it works? Something that you won’t be embarrassed to discuss with your family doctor or oncologist? Something that can improve your immune system and general health? That is exactly what you will find in this book. Read on for… • Actionable methods for naturally treating and preventing cancer (the scientific way, not the internet blogger way) • Simple things that you can add to your medical treatment to Improve Your Odds of successfully fighting cancer • 100% backed by science that you, or your doctor, can easily verify • Easy to read and understand, but formatted so that you can share the science with your doctor • Improve your immune system and general health • Evidence that some of the recommendations may significantly improve immunotherapy outcomes, as well as benefit chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. • New research information that has the potential to save many lives My hope is you’ll use this information to improve your medical treatment, not replace it. Even though some of the natural treatments have been scientifically shown to be very effective on their own, they are even more effective when used in conjunction with modern medicine. This is called “adjuvant” therapy. You should strive to “Improve Your Odds” of beating cancer, not thumb your nose at modern medicine. You do not need a scientific or medical background to understand this narrative—but its claims are evidenced with scientific abstracts that your doctor will appreciate (abstracts that you can skip if you wish to cut your reading time in half!). You will find that all recommendations have solid evidence behind them; this isn’t just another book where someone is simply making it all up and telling you what you want to hear. You should read this book with a highlighter and pencil at your side. This book has been extensively researched, and some of the information found here you will probably find in no other book or medical website. There is a special emphasis on how you can improve your immune system to better fight almost any cancer, even before you know you have it. You aren’t trying to fire your doctor; you just want to help “Improve Your Odds.” This book will help you do that. Your oncologist will want to know all of the supplements you are taking and why. This book includes the scientific abstracts and the information they need to find the full research studies. This will explain the “why” so you don’t have to. They may also want to geek out on all of this science as they rarely get exposed to research on natural cancer treatments. Finally, this book enables you to take some control over your cancer treatment or genetic predisposition. In fact, most of the recommendations in this book are great even if you are healthy, as they can help prevent cancer and improve your immune system, too. Whether you may have breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, etc., improving the immune system and your body’s ability to fight cancer is always beneficial.

Book Description
Beat the odds with a bold strategy from McKinsey & Company "Every once in a while, a genuinely fresh approach to business strategy appears" —legendary business professor Richard Rumelt, UCLA McKinsey & Company's newest, most definitive, and most irreverent book on strategy—which thousands of executives are already using—is a must-read for all C-suite executives looking to create winning corporate strategies. Strategy Beyond the Hockey Stick is spearheading an empirical revolution in the field of strategy. Based on an extensive analysis of the key factors that drove the long-term performance of thousands of global companies, the book offers a ground-breaking formula that enables you to objectively assess your strategy's real odds of future success. "This book is fundamental. The principles laid out here, with compelling data, are a great way around the social pitfalls in strategy development." —Frans Van Houten, CEO, Royal Philips N.V. The authors have discovered that over a 10-year period, just 1 in 12 companies manage to jump from the middle tier of corporate performance—where 60% of companies reside, making very little economic profit—to the top quintile where 90% of global economic profit is made. This movement does not happen by magic—it depends on your company's current position, the trends it faces, and the big moves you make to give it the strongest chance of vaulting over the competition. This is not another strategy framework. Rather, Strategy Beyond the Hockey Stick shows, through empirical analysis and the experiences of dozens of companies that have successfully made multiple big moves, that to dramatically improve performance, you have to overcome incrementalism and corporate inertia. "A different kind of book—I couldn't put it down. Inspiring new insights on the facts of what it takes to move a company's performance, combined with practical advice on how to deal with real-life dynamics in management teams." —Jane Fraser, CEO, Citigroup Latin America
