In this fourth year, we completed recruitment for all four phases of the study. we now have questionnaire data on 404 breast cancer survivors between 2-10 years post- diagnosis. These data include information on demographics, menstrual and reproductive history, medication history, pregnancy/fertility history, past and current symptoms that may be menopause related, use of alternative therapies diet and physical activity levels, as well as standardized measures of health-related quality of life. We also have bone density measurements and biologic data on a subset of 240 of these women, and 15-month follow-up bone density measurements on a further subset of 94 women.

This fifth and final year has been spent analyzing data and reporting on the multiple phases of the Cancer and Menopause Study (CAMS). The main results paper on the baseline CAMS data, "Breast Cancer in Younger Women: Reproductive and Late Health Effects of Treatment," was completed and accepted for publication by the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Two additional papers have been submitted to peer-reviewed journals for consideration, and a third has been accepted for publication. These papers include analyses on the relationship between cancer survivors' treatment experience and quality of life with 1) physical activity, 2) menopausal transition and symptoms and 3) cognitive function. Additional analyses are currently underway to examine more CAMS data, including investigation of bone density, fatigue, use of complementary and alternative medicines, biologic markers and body composition data, and their relationship to various facets of the cancer survivor experience.

This book analyzes in detail all aspects related to endocrine and metabolic late effects observed in patients treated for cancer, both in childhood and adulthood. The chapters focusing on the possible pathogenic mechanisms of late effects (i.e., premature aging and chronic inflammation) and on bone health in cancer survivors are particularly interesting and innovative. The volume also deals with hypothalamic-pituitary, thyroid and gonadal disorders, including infertility and how to prevent it. However, this undisputable success of medicine has a flip side: the late adverse effects of anticancer therapies. Pediatric oncologists were the first to cope with late complications of treatments, but today also adult oncologists and onco-hematologists recognize the relevance of this issue. Even though late effects observed in cancer survivors can affect any organ or system, endocrine and metabolic dysfunctions are the most frequently reported. Endocrine complications rarely influence life expectancy of cancer survivors, but they can significantly impact morbidity and quality of life. Among endocrine adverse effects, severe hypothalamic damage may be considered the most harmful in survivors, leading to morbid obesity, propensity to metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. This book aims to disseminate the knowledge about endocrine and metabolic adverse effects of cancer therapies and about survivorship care.
