Ferraro expands the current focus of the immigration-crime link to incorporate both the effect of immigration on anti-immigrant violence and the differential processes at work in new immigrant destinations. The findings on traditional crime are consistent with recent research and the community resource perspective, in that there is no observed effect of immigration on overall rates of crime, whether in traditional receiving areas or in new destinations. Analysis of anti-immigrant hate crimes suggests that while traditional receiving areas, especially those made up of older arrivals, may buffer residents from anti-immigrant attacks, immigrants in new destinations experience no such protections. Moreover, especially where the population is largely recently arrived, results suggest that immigrants in new destinations may be at heightened risk of victimization.

The research question and objective of this study is to answer the question whether does the undocumented Brazilian community living in Newark make crime rates worse? The present research is focused on the city of Newark because the city provides a snapshot that paints the bigger picture of what happened in America. While the population of immigrants was increasing, the crime rates were dropping. According to the U.S. Census of 2010-2014, the city is the most populous in the state of New Jersey. Historically, Newark is known for its violent crimes, but more recently for its cultural revival and significant drop on the crime rates. The relationship between immigration and crime has been debated for over decades, but it was not until recently that this idea started driving public policies; restricting visas, banning international entry, and strengthening border enforcement and now separating children from their families crossing the border illegally. But it is irrefutable that immigration policies should be driven by data, empirical evidence, and foreign relations practices; not by a sociological myth that perceives every undocumented immigrant as a criminal individual.

Descriptive findings indicate that immigrants are more likely to concentrate in Columbus neighborhoods characterized by low crime rate, low disadvantage and high availability of renter allocated housing. This suggests that affordable housing and low crime rates make particular neighborhoods more attractive to immigrants in a new destination city like Columbus OH. Multivariate results using negative binomial mixed effect models show that increases in immigration are associated with decreases in violent and property crime rates in Columbus OH. Furthermore, I find evidence that the presence of minority/immigrant owned business marginally enhances the negative relationship between immigration and crime in Columbus OH.
