Book Description
Excerpt from Illustrated History of the Borough of Queens, New York City For these reasons the history of the Borough 'of Queens-contained in the fol lowing pages does not confine itself to the past. It does indeed furnish a complete sketch of the settlement of the territory from the time when the first white man set foot upon the soil of Long Island, and it follows the efforts made to change a wilder ness into a blooming garden through the march Of the centuries, but it goes further. It shows how the borough has been developed, and in what manner, and for what reasons it is apt to grow in the future. It points out the great natural advantages the territory possesses, and the enterprises which, in the near future, will tend to bring about even greater changes than the past has produced. The history naturally deals with the men who have played important roles in the shaping of the destinies of the localities now forming the Borough of Queens in the past, and who have left their mark upon the conditions evolving slowly from insecurity almost amounting at times to chaos, until a staple and regular government was formed. But it shows, in addi tion, in the biographies of men who are at the present time interested in the welfare of the borough, and who, in public life or private enterprise, are devoting themselves to the upbuilding of the community, the forces that are at work. No better way could be found, in our opinion, to show what Queens is now, and what it is destined to be, for the work of man, even if intended for the day only, always influences the future and it is impossible to draw a line that divides sharply the work of those living from that of coming generations. Those who come after us will have to build upon what we have accomplished; they cannot entirely get away from it, and even if they choose new paths, they must reckon with those laid out by their forerunners. Book Description
A New York Times Notable Book of 2017! Here is New York, as you've never seen it before. A perfectly charming, sidesplittingly funny, intellectually entertaining illustrated history of the blocks, the buildings, and the guts of New York City, based on Julia Wertz's popular illustrated columns in The New Yorker and Harper's. In Tenements, Towers & Trash, Julia Wertz takes us behind the New York that you think you know. Not the tourist's New York-the Statue of Liberty makes a brief appearance and the Empire State Building not at all-but the guts, the underbelly, of this city that never sleeps. With drawings and comics in her signature style, Wertz regales us with streetscapes "Then and Now" and little-known tales, such as the lost history of Kim's Video, the complicated and unresolved business of Ray's Pizza, the vintage trash and horse bones that litter the shore of Brooklyn's Bottle Beach, the ludicrous pinball prohibition, Staten Island's secret abandoned boatyard, and the hair-raising legend of the infamous abortionist of Fifth Avenue, Madame Restell. From bars, bakeries, and bookstores to food carts, street cleaners, and apartments both cramped and grand, Tenements, Towers & Trash is a wild ride in a time machine taxi from the present day city to bygone days of yore.

Book Description
Brooklyn—famed for its bridge, its long-departed Dodgers, its Botanic Garden, and its accent—is the most populous borough in New York City and arguably the most colorful. Its many neighborhoods boast diverse and shifting ethnic enclaves, an abundance of architectural styles, and an amazing number of churches and festivals. Generously illustrated with both historical and contemporary photographs, The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn is an indispensable and entertaining guide. Begun as an offshoot of The Encyclopedia of New York City, which provides much of the historical background, the book takes its character from the neighborhoods themselves, as detailed by the Citizens Committee for New York City and Brooklyn Borough Historian John Manbeck. Taking us on a tour of some 90 neighborhoods (including ghost neighborhoods that no longer exist), the book identifies the boundaries of each one through a neighborhood profile and a street map. There is also an essay on each neighborhood as well as an insert with practical tips on subways, buses, libraries, police precincts, fire departments, and hospitals. In addition, each entry includes eclectic neighborhood facts: Erasmus Hall Academy, in Flatbush, boasts such famous graduates as Barbra Streisand and Bobby Fischer; during Poland’s 1990 elections, more than 5,000 absentee ballots were postmarked Greenpoint. The introduction by Kenneth T. Jackson gives an overview of Brooklyn, while an index allows readers to locate key sites within the borough. In 1898, when it was the third largest city in the United States, the City of Brooklyn merged with New York City to become one of its five boroughs. A century later it is time to salute this unique community in a book that will be an essential resource for past, present, and future residents. The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn is the first in a series on New York’s five boroughs.

Book Description
Continues the tradition -- actually the several traditions -- of photography in New York City. The predecessors of William Meyers worked almost entirely in Manhattan, but he worked in the other four boroughs -- Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Most of his pictures were taken on anonymous streets where the people of the place live and go about their business; they represent the quotidian, not the spectacular; they are the outer boroughs of the spirit as well as of the physical city. The work is not concerned with documentation, the way things look, but with thusness -- the feel of a place at a particular moment. Each image represents a certain time in a certain part of a certain city where, he has found, even in unlikely neighborhoods there are occasions for beauty.
