Leningrad
Author: Igor Vishnevetsky
Publisher: Deep Vellum Publishing
ISBN: 1564789381
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 129
Book Description
Closing the gap between the contemporary Russian novel and the masterpieces of the early Soviet avant-garde, this masterful mixture of prose and poetry, excerpts from private letters and diaries, and quotes from newspapers and NKVD documents, is a unique amalgam of documentary, philosophical novel, and black humor. Revolving around three central characters—a composer; his lover, Vera; and Vera's husband, a naval officer intercepting enemy communications—we are made witness to the inhuman conditions prevailing during the Siege of Leningrad, against a background of starvation and continuous bombing. In their wild attempts to survive, the protagonists hold on to their art, ideals, and sentiments—hoping that these might somehow remain uncorrupted despite the Bolsheviks, Nazis, and even death itself.

Igor & Marina
Author: Ilya Kutik
Publisher:
ISBN: 9788857231266
Category : Artist couples
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This first monograph of Igor & Marina gathers most important paintings made by the couple over the last twelve years. Classically trained in St. Petersburg, Russia, since 1997 the artists live and work in the United States. Their work is represented by galleries in New York, San Francisco, London. Igor's specialty is a subtle sense of color, a wonderful appreciation for the tactile nature of paint, canvas, other materials and intuition in playing with abstract images. Marina, on the other hand, possesses a remarkable talent for figurative art and reshaping neo-classical images that are based on the appreciation of West European and Russian Old Masters. Igor & Marina uniquely combine contemporary artistic language with historical heritage, inviting the viewer to enter their invented world, and, after that, to a journey through it. Their mastery of painting is imbued with deep humanity and strives for beauty that remains with viewers for a long time.

Russian Émigrés in the Intellectual and Literary Life of Interwar France
Author: Leonid Livak
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773590986
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 584
Book Description
In a pioneering exploration of the intellectual and literary exchange between Russian émigrés and French intelligentsia in the 1920s and 1930s, Leonid Livak provides an impressively comprehensive bibliographic overview of a veritable "who's who" of Russian intellectuals and literati, listing all the material published by Russian émigrés or on topics pertaining to them during the period under study. Focusing attention on a largely ignored chapter of European cultural history, this volume challenges historical assumptions by demonstrating processes of cultural cross-fertilization and illuminates the precedents Russians set for political exiles in the twentieth century. A remarkable achievement in scholarship, Russian Émigrés in the Intellectual and Literary Life of Inter-War France is a valuable resource for admirers and researchers of French and Russian culture and European intellectual history.

The Vexing Case of Igor Shafarevich, a Russian Political Thinker
Author: Krista Berglund
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3034802153
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 547
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive study about the non-mathematical writings and activities of the Russian algebraic geometer and number theorist Igor Shafarevich (b. 1923). In the 1970s Shafarevich was a prominent member of the dissidents’ human rights movement and a noted author of clandestine anti-communist literature in the Soviet Union. Shafarevich’s public image suffered a terrible blow around 1989 when he was decried as a dangerous ideologue of anti-Semitism due to his newly-surfaced old manuscript Russophobia. The scandal culminated when the President of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States suggested that Shafarevich, an honorary member, resign. The present study establishes that the allegations about anti-Semitism in Shafarevich’s texts were unfounded and that Shafarevich’s terrible reputation was cemented on a false basis.
