Book Description
I Remember Nonna is a collection of several Vignettes of my childhood experiences with Nonna during my pre-teen years, when my sister and I went to live in the small hamlet in Pennsylvania called Old Boston in the fall of 1941. Moving from a small town to a farm environment made every aspect of our daily life, from that point, a learning encounter. The most trying part was the very beginning when we had neither understanding of Italian nor any clue at all what to expect in Old Boston. It was those stark beginnings with Nonna that have made such an impact on my thinking later in my life. For the first several months, almost every moment with Nonna was a learning experience. It was years later when I began to look back and saw the comical side in each of these incidents. When I related these events to other members of the family, they found them very funny and thought them so typical of Nonna. I knew then that these were moments that had to be remembered and passed on by the family.

Book Description
This book is intended for anyone who has been through any kind of tragedy in your life and are continually victimizing yourself because of that tragedy. My desire is for you to read my book and understand that if I could have gone through everything I've been through in my life and still remain sane, so can you. I am a survivor and I want you to realize that you are too. Writing this book was very therapeutic for me; it was a way for me to release it. I hope reading it becomes very therapeutic for you as well. There is a bit of comedy and sarcasm in it that will make you laugh. However, I do use some adult language, so if you have a teenager whose perhaps been raped that you want to read it, please be sure you supervise them. I am who I am and don't pretend to be anyone else. Enjoy!

Nonna's House
Author: Jody Scaravella
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1476774137
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
This beautiful collection of food and nostalgia features great traditions from the heart of Italy, with delicious recipes and colorful stories from the internationally celebrated grandmothers of Enoteca Maria—a one-of-a-kind Italian restaurant where a rotating cast of nonnas are the star chefs. Enoteca Maria takes great home cooking seriously. At this intimate, hospitable restaurant on Staten Island, all the cooking is done by ten nonnas (grandmothers), drawing on their own family recipes, handed down for generations, which reflect their regional traditions. Here are their delicious homemade pastas, risottos, desserts, and more, which have foodies from all over the world taking the ferry to the forgotten borough for an authentic taste of Italy. Beautiful full-color photography captures the fresh, distinctive flavors of these surprising dishes. Nonna Cristina shares her beautiful Risotto with Strawberries, Black Pepper, and Parmesan; Nonna Margherita offers delectable Stuffed Peppers with Pine Nuts and Raisins; and Nonna Teresa shows off her prize-winning Meat and Cheese Lasagna. Nonna Elvira whips up her peerless Linguine with Cuttlefish and Ink; Adelina creates a savory Tagliatelle with Pumpkin, Sausage, and Chestnuts; and Rosaria makes handmade Spaghetti alla Chitarra with Cherry Tomatoes and Porcini Mushrooms. Nonna Carmelina shares her classic Potato Pie with Ham, Salami, and Mozzarella; Rosa confides her nonna’s secret recipe for Rabbit with Sage; and Nina sautés Chicken alla Capricciosa, with prosciutto and mushrooms. Nonna Francesca launches the book with advice on the time-honored art of preserving everything from olives to soppressata. With its utterly delicious tastes of grandmother’s kitchen, Nonna’s House is a legacy of flavors passed down through generations, now captured here forever. Restaurant founder Jody Scaravella says it best: “If I have a choice between a three-star Michelin chef’s restaurant and Grandma’s, I’m going to Grandma’s. I’m going to the source.”

A Gun and Cherries in the Bucket of Blood
Author: Greg Casadei
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1499021402
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 587
Book Description
Italian immigrants of the early 20th century experienced an inevitable, and often emotionally painful, cultural transformation after arriving in America. Worlds turned upside down. Lives changed forever. Greg Casadei captures what that process was like in this touching tale about his family's "Americanization." He also provides insights and lessons that his experiences provided along the way. The Americanization of Greg's family began with his grandparents in Sassofeltrio, Italy in the early 1900s. It ended with the January 2010 passing of his father in Tucson, Arizona. In between lies a rich story of fear and faith, hardships and overcoming, respect and toughness, risk taking and rewards, family and friends, love and togetherness, separation and crumbled foundations, death and despair, and the gradual unraveling of a once tight-knit family. Through historical facts, anecdotes and humor, Greg provides a vivid picture of what it was like growing up in an Italian family in America. You'll laugh, cry and want more as Greg recounts stories about colorful family members and their lives in Sassofeltrio, Oakwood, Michigan, and Tucson, Arizona. After turning the last page, you'll understand why the Americanization of Greg's family was so painful, but why he wouldn't have traded the experience for anything.
