Book Description
People in Western societies have long been interested in their dreams and what they mean. However, few non-Muslims in the West are likely to seek interpretation of those dreams to help them make life-changing decisions. In the Islamic world the situation is quite different. Dreaming and the import of visions are here of enormous significance, to the degree that many Muslims believe that in their dreams they are receiving divine guidance: for example, on whether or not to accept a marriage proposal, or a new job opportunity. In her authoritative new book, Elizabeth Sirriyeh offers the first concerted history of the rise of dream interpretation in Islamic culture, from medieval times to the present. Central to the book is the figure of the Prophet Muhammad - seen to represent for Muslims the perfect dreamer, visionary and interpreter of dreams. Less benignly, dreams have been exploited in the propaganda of Islamic militants in Afghanistan, and in apocalyptic visions relating to the 9/11 attacks. This timely volume gives an important, fascinating and overlooked subject the exploration it has long deserved.

Book Description
On August 29, 1911, a barefoot, half-starved, gaunt Indian gave himself up to White civilization at a slaughterhouse in Oroville, California. We never learned his name, but we soon learned of his tragedy: mainly that he was the last member of his tribe, the Yahi, to be alive in the wilderness. However, he became known to the world as Ishi, the last human to live freely in the Paleolithic Stone Age on the North American Continent. Through Ishi we can imagine a mythological, primeval view of Manifest Destiny and look back, as if with a telescope through time, into the interior of the mind and into the evolution of human thought. Through Ishi we can discover the decency of humanity, and perhaps we can forgive ourselves for our ancestors’ hateful genocide, especially against the Native Americans of Northern California.

Book Description
This volume discusses the so-called Oneirocriticon of Achmet, the most important Byzantine work on dream interpretation which was written in Greek in the 10th century and has greatly influenced subsequent dreambooks in Byzantine Greek, Medieval Latin, and modern European languages. By comparing the Oneirocriticon with the 2nd-century A.D. dreambook of Artemidoros (translated into Arabic in the 9th century) and five medieval Arabic dreambooks, this study demonstrates that the Oneirocriticon is a Christian Greek adaption of Islamic Arabic material and that the similarities between it and Artemidoros are due to the influence of Artemidoros on the Arabic sources of the Byzantine work. The Oneirocriticon's textual tradition, its language, the identities of its author and patron, and its position among other Byzantine translations from Arabic into Greek are also investigated.
