Book Description
The Handbook of Shock Waves contains a comprehensive, structured coverage of research topics related to shock wave phenomena including shock waves in gases, liquids, solids, and space. Shock waves represent an extremely important physical phenomena which appears to be of special practical importance in three major fields: compressible flow (aerodynamics), materials science, and astrophysics. Shock waves comprise a phenomenon that occurs when pressure builds to force a reaction, i.e. sonic boom that occurs when a jet breaks the speed of sound. This Handbook contains experimental, theoretical, and numerical results which never before appeared under one cover; the first handbook of its kind. The Handbook of Shock Waves is intended for researchers and engineers active in shock wave related fields. Additionally, R&D establishments, applied science & research laboratories and scientific and engineering libraries both in universities and government institutions. As well as, undergraduate and graduate students in fluid mechanics, gas dynamics, and physics. Key Features* Ben-Dor is known as one of the founders of the field of shock waves* Covers a broad spectrum of shock wave research topics* Provides a comprehensive description of various shock wave related subjects* First handbook ever to include under one separate cover: experimental, theoretical, and numerical results

Stronger Than a Hundred Men
Author: Terry S. Reynolds
Publisher: JHU Press
ISBN: 9780801872488
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 476
Book Description
Like many apparently simple devices, the vertical water wheel has been around for so long that it is taken for granted. Yet this "picturesque artifact" was for centuries man's primary mechanical source of power and was the foundation upon which mills and other industries developed. Stronger than a Hundred Men explores the development of the vertical water wheel from its invention in ancient times through its eventual demise as a source of power during the Industrial Revolution. Spanning more than 2000 years, Terry Reynolds's account follows the progression of this labor-saving device from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and America-covering the evolution of the water wheel itself, the development of dams and reservoirs, and the applications of water power.

Adiabatic Thermodynamics Of Fluids: From Hydrodynamics To General Relativity
Author: Christian Fronsdal
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9811200696
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
Unlike the traditional approach to thermodynamics, this book begins with a brief exposition of hydrodynamics. At this stage, the development is limited to potential flows, because, until recently, that is all that could be done, but also for didactic reasons. However, the reader will find that the situation has changed radically with the discovery of Conservative Hydrodynamics. At the core of thermodynamics is the Gibbsean minimum energy principle. In this book, it is generalized to include the hydrodynamical degrees of freedom; that is, localized as a field theory of density, pressure, temperature and entropy. The theory is referred to as local thermodynamics, as opposed to traditional, global thermodynamics where the main foundation is the variational principle of Gibbs, with a modification recommended by Prigogine. This book exists because there is (or was) no satisfactory theory of the dynamical metric interacting with extended distributions of matter. It will be shown that any theory of interacting fields that includes the Einsteinian metric must be based on an action principle. This allows us, for the first time, to use 'energy' as a precise concept in vortex dynamics. Sample applications include rotating planets, Couette flow, stresses in fluids (inside the meniscus, negative pressures), immiscible fluids, amongst others.

Relativistic Theories of Materials
Author: A. Bressan
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642811205
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 302
Book Description
The theory of relativity was created in 1905 to solve a problem concerning electromagnetic fields. That solution was reached by means of profound changes in fundamental concepts and ideas that considerably affected the whole of physics. Moreover, when Einstein took gravitation into account, he was forced to develop radical changes also in our space-time concepts (1916). Relativistic works on heat, thermodynamics, and elasticity appeared as early as 1911. However, general theories having a thermodynamic basis, including heat conduction and constitutive equations, did not appear in general relativity until about 1955 for fluids and appeared only after 1960 for elastic or more general finitely deformed materials. These theories dealt with materials with memory, and in this connection some relativistic versions of the principle of material indifference were considered. Even more recently, relativistic theories incorporating finite deformations for polarizable and magnetizable materials and those in which couple stresses are considered have been formulated. A broader description of the development of these relativistic topics is contained in § 13. The purpose of this book is to describe the foundations of the general relativistic theories that include constitutive equations, and to present some applications, mainly to elastic waves, of these theories. This tract is divided into two parts. In the first part only the Eulerian point of view is considered; basic equations of general relativity, other than constitutive equations, are stated in full generality (except for couple stresses which are considered in part 2). Part 1 also thoroughly covers fluids, including constitutive equations.

Constitutive Laws and Microstructure
Author: David R. Axelrad
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642833039
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
A special survey of the extensive field of Constitutive Laws is given in 11 lectures, divided into three parts: Thermodynamics of Materials, Stochastic Processes and Material Behaviour, Constitutive Relations for Simple Fluids and Microphysics of Solids. The collection of lectures comprehends a novel survey of thermodynamical constitutive theories, and contributions to material theories with after-effects including experiments, stochastic constitutive laws, molecular dynamics for simulating material properties, electrodynamical constitutive properties, and thermodynamic and microphysical modelling of polymers. The selected lectures emphasize the microstructural aspect of constitutive laws, and this collection presents a new facet of constitutive laws.
