Book Description
Excerpt from Hydraulic Power and Hydraulic Machinery The increasing interest taken in water-pressure machinery, and the extended field which has opened out of late years for its employment, have led me to record, in a form convenient for reference, existing experience in this branch of engineering. In this task I have availed myself of the information published in the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Iron and Steel Insti tute, and of other Societies. I have thus not confined myself within the range of my own professional practice, but have utilised the experience of others wherever I have found that it would increase the usefulness of the book. Book Description
Excerpt from Gilbert Hydraulic and Pneumatic Engineering For instance water. It's nice to drink, and bathe in but very few of us ever stop to consider the innumerable uses water is put to and what a great in uence it has on many things we do. Most of us are satisfied to turn on the faucet and get our water in that way. If something is wrong and the water doesn't come from the faucet we call up the plumber, but we do not realize what has gone wrong simply because we do not understand how a house is piped for water nor do we understand why water gets into the pipes, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Hydraulics The unit of linear measure universally adopted in English and American hydraulic literature is the foot, which is defined as one-third of the standard yard. For some minor purposes, such as the designation of the diameters of orifices and pipes, the inch is employed, but inches should always be reduced to feet for use in hydraulic formulas. The unit of superficial measure is usually the square foot, except for the expression of the intensity of pressures, when the square inch is more commonly employed. The units of volume employed in measuring water are the cubic foot and the gallon. In Great Britain the Imperial gallon is used, and in this country the old English gallon, the former being 20 per cent larger that the latter. Book Description
Excerpt from Simple Hydraulic Formulae The author of this work has been led to its publication chiefly through the desire of many professional friends, and he would observe, in offering it to the profession, and others connected with the measurement of water, that it has been his aim not to produce a treatise on Hydraulics, for many have been written and leave little or nothin g to be desired, but rather to introduce a number of Hydraulic Formulae applicable to almost all cases which may be met with in the actual practice of the Hydraulic Engineer. Book Description
Excerpt from Hydraulic Machinery: With an Introduction to Hydraulics In books of this class an attempt is usually made to avoid using the calculus, or to disguise its use in the language of so-called elementary mathematics this course is not altogether free from objections, the proofs given being usually long, difficult, and not too exact. The present work is the result of a suggestion by Professor Perry, F whose treatment of the theoretical portions of the subject I have followed; and I venture to think that, although in some cases it has seemed necessary to make use of elementary applications of the calculus, the proofs are simple, easy, and satisfactory. The student who does not possess the small amount of knowledge necessary to follow the reasoning, had better accept the results without proof than attempt to master those often given.
