Book Description
Excerpt from Hydraulic, Steam, and Hand Power Lifting and Pressing Machinery The author, having heard a desire expressed by many for a practical treatise upon Hydraulic, Steam, and Hand Power Lifting and Pressing Machinery, has been induced to under take the task. The work is addressed to engineers whose practice has not been in this branch of engineering. Also to architects and users of such machinery, to give them an insight into the same, and to afford some help, either in the design or as a guide to the adoption of machinery suitable to the special requirements of the particular case. Most of the machinery and work described, except some cases specially mentioned, are from the author's own experience. Assuming that practical men are chiefly addressed, he has not gone into any rudimentary descriptions, but has mentioned only such details as may be useful for the purpose. Very little discussion is entered into relative to the value of certain machines, for the same reason; but the few results given from practice may prove more useful. He trusts that the work may be acceptable to those who are seeking information in this branch of practice. The work has been written in a concise form, as it was thought it would be more acceptable to those addressed to have practical facts and data expressed in as few words as possible. The author fears, owing to the want of time at his disposal, that the work is not in such a perfect form as he would have wished; be, however, trusts all shortcomings in this respect will meet with lenient judgment from his readers. Book Description
Excerpt from Hydraulic Power and Hydraulic Machinery Whilst describing the most interesting types of Hydraulic Machinery, I have abstained alike from criticisms on the details of construction, and from any attempts to lay down fixed rules for the employment Of any particular appliance. The conditions 'which render one form Of appliance more suitable than another vary in almost every case, so that each requires to be dealt with according to the practical circumstances which govern it. As my earliest experiences in this branch Of my practice were gained nearly thirty years ago, when with Sir William (now Lord) Armstrong, I have dedicated this book to him; and his friendly acceptance of this dedication has enabled me, in these later days, to refer to an association which I look back upon with pleasure and pride. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Pumping and Hydraulic Machinery Besides rotary, centrifugal, and turbine pumps, there must also be included steam, air, gas, and hydraulic direct-displacement, or pulsator pumps, as well as air-lift or aeration pumps, together with the various appliances especially adapted for raising petroleum from deep wells. In all of these separate and distinct classes of pumps, in addition to a number Of' typical examples illustrating the most modern practice - the construction, working, and relative advantages have been impartially considered - an explanation has also been given wherever necessary of the theoretical principles involved. The increasing use of internal-combustion power for automobile and. Maritime propulsion, a subject fully dealt with by the author in The Evolution of the Internal Combustion Engine, recently published. Book Description
Excerpt from Pumping Machinery: A Practical Hand-Book Relating to the Construction and Management of Steam and Power Pumping Machines It is not probable that any satisfactory device for raising water is lost to us, although its history has long since been forgotten, the fact of utility has been the very means of its preservation nor did the great invasions and conquests of the ancient world affect unfavorably the development of this useful art, for water was alike essential to the conqueror and the con quered. Book Description
Excerpt from Hydraulic Machinery: With an Introduction to Hydraulics In books of this class an attempt is usually made to avoid using the calculus, or to disguise its use in the language of so-called elementary mathematics this course is not altogether free from objections, the proofs given being usually long, difficult, and not too exact. The present work is the result of a suggestion by Professor Perry, F whose treatment of the theoretical portions of the subject I have followed; and I venture to think that, although in some cases it has seemed necessary to make use of elementary applications of the calculus, the proofs are simple, easy, and satisfactory. The student who does not possess the small amount of knowledge necessary to follow the reasoning, had better accept the results without proof than attempt to master those often given.
