In the summer of 2013, Hungary was the guest of honor for 10 days at one of the largest outdoor events in the United States, the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival. A Hungarian Heritage – Roots to Revival (Magyar Örökség – A gyökerektől az újjászületésig) címet viselőprogram Magyarország népművészeti hagyományait mutatta be a zene, a tánc, a kézművesség, az öltözködés, a gasztronómia terén. Kétszer öt napig, június 26-30. és július 3-7. között mintegy 120 főnyi, zenészekből, táncosokból, kézművesekből, szakácsokból, kutatókból, játékmesterekből, pedagógusokból és hagyományőrző közösségek képviselőiből álló magyar delegáció élettel telítette meg az USA nemzeti terének a National Mall-nak füvére épített magyar falut. A szereplők a teljes magyar nyelvterületről, határon innen és túlról, valamint Észak-Amerikából érkeztek. A most megjelent Magyar Örökség Washingtonban című könyv ennek a fesztiválszereplésnek állít emléket. Belátást enged a részletekbe, az előkészítés, szervezés folyamatába, a döntési helyzetekbe, a koncepcionális elképzelésekbe, a feladat összetettségébe, a csapatmunkába. --- Titled Hungarian Heritage – Roots to Revival, the program displayed Hungary’s folk art traditions in music, dance, crafts, dress and gastronomy. For the 10 days of the festival, June 26–30 and July 3–7, the Hungarian Village on the National Mall was filled with some 120 delegates of musicians, dancers, artisans, cooks, researchers, folk games experts, educators, and representatives of tradition bearing communities. The performers came from all over the Hungarian speaking areas, from within and beyond Hungary’s borders, as well as North America.

In 1941, Elmhurst College established the only Hungarian Department in the United States and gave the responsibility of developing its program to Dr. Barnabas Dienes. His work was the basis of what by the 1950s had developed into a significant repository of cultural, linguistic and social research. August J. Molnar guided growing entity to become a foundation, which began its activity in 1955. At the end of the First World War Fraknó and the Esterházy Castle, where the treasury had been kept since the 17th century, passed to Austria. The Esterházy family placed the major part of the Treasury with the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest. In 1944, during the Second World War, the Treasury was moved for greater safety to the Esterházy family palace which, during the siege of Budapest, was hit by a bomb. Part of the collection was totally destroyed or irreparably damaged. Every fragment possible was rescued and since the 1960s the conservators of the museum have worked on the conservation of the surviving pieces, miraculously returning many to their former glory. The final section in the exhibition covers this successful, ongoing conservation work.
