This book explores what attracts people to aidwork and to what extent the promises of aidwork are fulfilled. 'Aidland' is a highly complex and heterogeneous context which includes many different occupations, forms of employment and organizations. Analysing the processes that lead to the involvement in development cooperation, emergency relief and human rights work and tracing the pathways into and through Aidland, the book addresses working and living conditions in Aidland, gender relations and inequality among aid personnel and what impact aidwork has on the life-courses of aidworkers. In order to capture the trajectories that lead to Aidland a biographical perspective is employed which reveals that boundary crossing between development cooperation, emergency relief and human rights is not unusual and that considering these fields as separate spheres might overlook important connections. Rich reflexive data is used to theorize about the often contradictory experiences of people working in aid whose careers are shaped by geo-politics, changing priorities of donors and a changing composition of the aid sector. Exploring the life worlds of people working in aid, this book contributes to the emerging sociology and anthropology of aidwork and will be of interest to professionals and researchers in humanitarian and development studies, sociology, anthropology, political science and international relations, international social work and social psychology.

This volume examines the EU’s Global Strategy in relation to human security approaches to conflict. Contemporary conflicts are best understood as a social condition in which armed groups mobilise sectarian and fundamentalist sentiments and construct a predatory economy through which they enrich themselves at the expense of ordinary citizens. The dynamics of migration in Europe have changed dramatically over the last few decades. Some countries, such as Ireland, Italy and Spain, are newcomers to an increasingly diverse Europe, having moved from being sources of emigration to destinations for migrants. Others such as France, Germany and the UK have many more years of experience with immigrants. Some of the biggest challenges facing Europe in the context of migration relate to irregular migration and integration by immigrants and refugees. What are the immigration needs of the different European countries? What are their labour needs? Can Europe’s existing population satisfy those labour needs? How can European countries work together to protect and improve the current refugee and asylum system? In the light of these pressing issues, it is vital that academics and NGOs work together to promote debate, research and the publication of reliable information about migration and refugees. This volume presents contributions related to a selection of lectures held at a series of European Summer Schools on Migration, Diversity and Identities. This European Summer School programme has been developed as part of a doctoral programme by the group Migration, Multiculturality and Ethnic Conflict within the Thematic Network Humanitarian Development Studies, HumanitarianNet. Amongst its first activities, this group conducted in 1997 a survey on existing courses and units on migration and integration among the participating universities. Based on the data generated, the group developed modules for European Summer Schools for PhD students doing their PhD research in the field of migration or integration of migrants. The Summer Schools of the programme are integral part of a European Doctoral Programme on Migration, Diversity and Identities which aims to encourage a European exposure of PhD students and to support networking among the young researchers on the European level. The European Doctoral Programme was developed by the Migration Group within HumanitarianNet in the context of the Bologna process and the TUNING project of the EU Commission according to the recommendations fo the European Conference of University Rectors. It is now linked to the new European Network of Excellence IMISCOE which assembles 19 European key research institutes on Migration Integration and Social Cohesion. The selected lectures are focusing on three major aspects for comparative research on a European level: Firstly, some theoretical and conceptual discussion on migration, diversity and identities, themes which gave the programme its very name. Secondly, on the relation between migration processes, their consequences, and the sphere of politics and policy making. Finally, —since the programme also intended to support young researchers in their PhD project— two papers on methodological problems which emerge when doing comparative research on migration at a European level.
