Book Description
Taking a psychological perspective, this book examines the role of Human-Computer Interaction in the field of Information Systems research. The introductory section of the book covers the basic tenets of the HCI discipline, including how it developed and an overview of the various academic disciplines that contribute to HCI research. The second part of the book focuses on the application of HCI to Information Systems research, and reviews ways in which HCI techniques, methodologies and other research components have been used to date in the IS field. The third section of the book looks at the research areas where HCI has not yet been fully exploited in relation to IS, such as broadening user groups and user acceptance of technology. The final section of the book comprises of a set of guidelines for students to follow when undertaking an HCI based research project.* Offers a comprehensive insight into the social shaping of technology* Includes in depth analysis of HCI issues relating to mobile devices * Provides guidelines, technical tips and an overview of relevant data analysis techniques to help students develop their own research projects

Book Description
Continual technological evolution has led to an explosion of new techniques in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. Research Methods in Human-Computer Interaction is a thoroughly comprehensive guide to performing research and is essential reading for both quantitative and qualitative methods. Chapters cover a broad range of topics relevant to the collection and analysis of HCI data, going beyond experimental design and surveys, to cover ethnography, time diaries, physiological measurements, case studies, and other essential elements in the well-informed HCI researcher's toolkit. “This book is a must read for anyone in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. The multi-disciplinarian approach, housed in the reality of the technological world today, makes for a practical and informative guide for user interface designers, software and hardware engineers and anyone doing user research.” Dr. Mary Czerwinski, Research Area Manager, Microsoft Research, USA “Research Methods in HCI is an excellent read for practitioners and students alike. It discusses all the must-know theory, provides detailed instructions on how to carry out the research, and offers great examples. I loved it!” Professor Vanessa Evers, Professor, Human Computer Studies Lab, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands "The book is superb: comprehensive, clear, and engaging! This is a one-stop HCI methods reference library. If you can only buy one HCI methods book, this is the one!" Dr. Clare-Marie Karat, IBM TJ Watson Research, USA, and recipient of the 2009 ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award “A much needed and very useful book, covering important HCI research methods overlooked in standard research methods texts.” Professor Gilbert Cockton, School of Design, Northumbria University, United Kingdom

Book Description
MobileHCI is a forum for academics and practitioners to discuss the challenges and potential solutions for e?ective human-computer interaction with mobile systems and services. It covers the design, evaluation and application of te- niques and approaches for all mobile computing devices and services. MobileHCI 2004 was the sixth in the series of conferences that was started at Glasgow U- versity in 1998 by Chris Johnson. We previously chaired the conference in 1999 in Edinburgh (as part of INTERACT 1999) and in 2001 in Lille (as part of IHM-HCI 2001). The last two years saw the conference move to Italy, ?rst - der the chairmanship of Fabio Patern` o in Pisa then under Luca Chittaro in Udine. In 2005 the conference will move to Austria to be chaired by Manfred Tscheligi. Each year the conference has its own website hosted by the conference chair, however the address www. mobilehci. org will always point to the next (or current) conference. The number of submissions has increased every year. This year we received 79 full papers (63 were received last year) from which we accepted the best 25. We had 81 short papers and posters submitted (59 last year) and accepted 20 of these as short papers and 22 as posters. We received 9 workshop, 4 tutorial and 2 panel proposals, from which 5, 2 and 2, respectively, were accepted.
