Book Description
Nerve endings in the walls of the carotid sinuses and the aortic arch transduce arterial pressure changes and provide the central nervous system with a steady stream of encoded information. On the basis of this information, efferent autonomic neural activity is modulated finely, and the neurohumoral milieu of the heart and the blood vessels is adjusted on a second-to-second basis. The arterial baroreflex may be the most important of the cardiovascular control mechanisms, because the baroreflex, above all other reflex mechanisms, is the one whose speed is most adequate to respond rapidly to the abrupt transients of arterial pressure that occur in daily life. This volume presents the many experimental methods available for use in humans that have been recently developed. Some are ingenious and yield results that earlier might have been thought impossible to obtain from human volunteers. Development of these new methods has increased the scientific credibility of human baroreflex research, and this work discusses the advances made in these studies. It clearly describes the existing deficiencies in the understanding of baroreflex mechanisms, and suggests methods for future research in this developing field.

The Heart in Rheumatic, Autoimmune and Inflammatory Diseases
Author: Udi Nussinovitch
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128032685
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 768
Book Description
The prevalence of autoimmune diseases and rheumatic conditions is constantly increasing. Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 7-10% of the population of the United States, while more than 50,000,000 American adults suffer from some type of arthritis. The Heart in Rheumatic, Autoimmune and Inflammatory Diseases examines the complex mechanisms relating to cardiac diseases from a pathophysiological and clinical point of view. Autoimmune rheumatic diseases can affect the coronary vessels, myocardium, pericardium, heart valves and the conduction system. The diagnosis of these unique cardiac complications necessitates medical awareness and a high index of suspicion. Increased risk of advanced atherosclerosis plays a pivotal role in the development of cardiac diseases in systemic, rheumatic and autoimmune illnesses. Yet, other complex immune medicated mechanisms may contribute to the pathogenesis. Patients' optimal care requires coordination between the primary caregiver, the rheumatologist, immunologist and cardiologist. Screening for cardiovascular risk factors, recognition of high-risk patients and identification of subclinical cardiac conditions are of great importance. Moreover, regulation of inflammation, as well as abnormal immune responses and the initiation of early treatments should be the focus of patient management. A continuous attempt to identify novel therapeutic targets and change the natural history of the underlying disease and its cardiac manifestations is in progress. The book aims at providing the readers with a state of the art collection of up to date information regarding clinically important topics based on experts' perspectives. This book was a result of an extended coordinated collaboration of one-hundred and fifty-four distinguished scientists from thirty-one countries around the globe. - A review of common, as well as unusual (yet clinically significant) medical cardiac complications of prevalent rheumatic, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. - Focuses on aspects of pathophysiological processes, clinical presentations, screening tests, prognostic implications and novel therapeutic approaches. - Presents an up-to-date "level of evidence and "strengths of recommendations for suggested therapies and reviews all randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses and other supporting published clinical findings.

Baroreceptor Reflexes
Author: P.B. Persson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642763669
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 497
Book Description
It is a great honor and pleasure for me to introduce this book; an honor, because of the scientific renown and authority of the investigators who have edited the volume and contributed the chapters; a pleasure, because my own long-lasting interest in the baroreflexes has always gone in the same directions as those along which the authors of this book have conceived and organized their work. It is particularly meaningful, in my opinion, that the very title of this volume underlines the integrative functions and the clinical aspects of baroreceptor reflexes. Under the aspect of integration, it is more and more apparent that baroreceptor reflexes, though preponderantly influencing cardiovascular functions, are not limited to cardiovascular control. Their influence on respiration has been well known since the earliest studies on baroreflexes, and wider influences have more recently been shown, e. g. , on hormone release, on sleep and vigilance, and on emotional behavior. Even within the scope of cardiovascular regulation, the integrated action of baroreflexes is not only directly exerted on the heart and blood vessels, but is also exerted through more devious but no less important routes, such as renin release from juxtaglomerular cells and sodium and water reabsorption by the renal tubules.
