The Serotonin System
Author: Mark Tricklebank
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128133244
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 307
Book Description
The Serotonin System: History, Neuropharmacology, and Pathology provides an up-to-date accounting on the physiology and pathophysiology of serotonin and the role it plays in behavioral functions. In addition, the book explores the potential roles of 5-HT1 in neurodevelopmental disorders and summarizes the history of the discovery and development of serotonergic drugs for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. This concise, yet thorough, volume is the perfect introduction to this critical neurotransmitter. It is ideal for students and researchers new to the study of behavior, neuropsychiatry or neuropharmacology, but is also a great resource for established investigators who want a greater perspective on serotonin. - Examines the role of serotonin in physiological functions and neuropsychiatric disorders - Provides in-depth knowledge on all aspects of the serotonin system - Explores serotonergic receptors as targets for both current and new therapeutic compounds

Radiation and the International Space Station
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309068851
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 96
Book Description
A major objective of the International Space Station is learning how to cope with the inherent risks of human spaceflightâ€"how to live and work in space for extended periods. The construction of the station itself provides the first opportunity for doing so. Prominent among the challenges associated with ISS construction is the large amount of time that astronauts will be spending doing extravehicular activity (EVA), or "space walks." EVAs from the space shuttle have been extraordinarily successful, most notably the on-orbit repair of the Hubble Space Telescope. But the number of hours of EVA for ISS construction exceeds that of the Hubble repair mission by orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the ISS orbit has nearly twice the inclination to Earth's equator as Hubble's orbit, so it spends part of every 90-minute circumnavigation at high latitudes, where Earth's magnetic field is less effective at shielding impinging radiation. This means that astronauts sweeping through these regions will be considerably more vulnerable to dangerous doses of energetic particles from a sudden solar eruption. Radiation and the International Space Station estimates that the likelihood of having a potentially dangerous solar event during an EVA is indeed very high. This report recommends steps that can be taken immediately, and over the next several years, to provide adequate warning so that the astronauts can be directed to take protective cover inside the ISS or shuttle. The near-term actions include programmatic and operational ways to take advantage of the multiagency assets that currently monitor and forecast space weather, and ways to improve the in situ measurements and the predictive power of current models.

Detecting, Modelling and Responding to Effusive Eruptions
Author: A.J.L. Harris
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 1862397368
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 680
Book Description
For effusive volcanoes in resource-poor regions, there is a pressing need for a crisis response-chain bridging the global scientific community to allow provision of standard products for timely humanitarian response. As a first step in attaining this need, this Special Publication provides a complete directory of current operational capabilities for monitoring effusive eruptions. This volume also reviews the state-of-the-art in terms of satellite-based volcano hot-spot tracking and lava-flow simulation. These capabilities are demonstrated using case studies taken from well-known effusive events that have occurred worldwide over the last two decades at volcanoes such as Piton de la Fournaise, Etna, Stromboli and Kilauea. We also provide case-type response models implemented at the same volcanoes, as well as the results of a community-wide drill used to test a fully-integrated response focused on an operational hazard-GIS. Finally, the objectives and recommendations of the ‘Risk Evaluation, Detection and Simulation during Effusive Eruption Disasters’ working group are laid out in a statement of community needs by its members.
