Charles Villiers Stanford wrote two cycles of songs for baritone with orchestra and chorus, setting nautical verses by the popular poet Henry Newbolt. From its premiere at the Leeds Musical Festival in October 1904, Songs of the Sea was a great success; Songs of the Fleet followed in 1910 and was transparently modeled on it (even quoting from the earlier work). Both works became very popular among amateur choral societies. Songs of the Sea was published in full score a year after its composition; it now appears in a critical edition for the first time in the present volume, which also includes the first publication of the orchestral version of Songs of the Fleet. Both works demonstrate Stanfords mastery of orchestral technique and sureness of touch. Newbolts texts alternate between heroic and sentimental moods; Stanford responded with music that is dramatic and atmosphericindeed, with some of the most remarkable textures of his whole oeuvre.

This edition presents a selection of Johann Herbeck’s sacred choral works with instrumental accompaniment representing his association with important Austrian organizations and institutions. Texts in Latin and German are featured, along with both mixed and men’s choruses. The earliest examples represent Herbeck’s basic musical ability at the age of fifteen as a student at the Heiligenkreuz Abbey in Lower Austria (two settings of “Tantum ergo,” 1847) and his greater competence just a few years later as a member of the Church of the Piarists in Vienna (“De profundis,” 1851). Only five years later, his two lengthy works for men’s chorus and military brass band, which he conducted in his debut as director of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein (“Psalm: Der Herr ist mein Licht” and “Te Deum,” 1856), exhibited mature musical mastery. The same level of competence is evident in his works for mixed chorus that he performed upon being named founding conductor of the Viennese Singverein (“Sperent in te,” 1858) and before and after becoming the imperial Hofkapellmeister (“Adoro te,” 1864; “In ecclesiis,” 1867).

John Eccless setting of Europes Revels for the Peace of Ryswick was performed at court and in the theater to mark the successful conclusion of the first part of the negotiations of the Peace of Ryswick (1697). This was an occasion of great rejoicing for the English, and, indeed, for the rest of Europe, as it offered the chance of some political stability after the turbulent events of the Civil Wars. The action of the piece falls into two halves, within which the ideas are presented in individual scenes or entries reminiscent of a masque. The political messages contained in the work include the role in society for returning soldiers and the superiority of the English on the battlefield, and serious and comic elements which rely on a good dose of national stereotyping and on the understanding of different national traits through dance.
