But besides that you also have to ensure that you make some profit for yourself. And quite often these two demands can be in conflict with each other. Different people use different techniques to set the prices of their products. Some of them have a scientific basis and some do not. Given below is one such procedure which works with an understanding of the production cost, customer expectations and other players in the field. Cost is defined as the sum total of the expenses that you incur when making a product. Expenses include cost of raw material, machinery, packaging, delivery etc. Price is amount customers have to pay for per unit of you product /service. For you to make a profit, the price should be more than the cost. Your prices should be consistently above the cost if you are planning to run your company for a long time, except in special cases. Sometimes you can lower the prices, to gain entry into a market for example. Starting with prices which are lower than your competitors would make people notice you. And once you collect a decent number of customers you can gradually increase prices! How much would customers pay for your services is directly proportional to significant and valuable they think your product is. Of course your marketing strategies and reputation in the market will play a significant role in this regard. Between these two numbers, your cost and the price your customers are willing to pay for your product lies your ideal price. If your price is a little lower than what your customers are willing to pay for your services, it would definitely work in your favor in the long run. If your price is higher that what is fair in the eyes of the customer you would end up losing your appeal and market and gradually your viability.

Book Description
The price of a product or a service is a critical element of the marketing mix. Price influences product demand, and the firm's revenue and profits. Prices also signal product quality and value, customer self-image, and the seller's pricing practices. With appropriate balance of theory, applications, and analytics, this book provides business students and practitioners the tools to make profitable pricing decisions under a variety of real-life contexts — current and emerging.Theoretical foundations for pricing decisions come from microeconomics, psychology, and behavioral decision theories. Well-established economic principles, with available data and analytics, help firms customize prices based on customers' willingness to pay, quantity purchased, timing and urgency of purchase, and by bundling their products and services. Pricing and promotional strategies of firms are further informed by the consideration of consumer psychology as well as the decision rules that consumers employ in framing of and responding to prices. As a practical step-by-step guide for firms, the book presents a comprehensive framework for pricing decisions. The framework illustrates how firms' pricing decisions are shaped by customer valuation of the product or service, firm cost, and competition within the category. Additional considerations include: channel arrangements, legal and regulatory limits, public sentiments, and the overriding strategy for the firm. Short cases and numerical examples help illustrate how these factors can be incorporated in firm making decisions. In addition to offering the theoretical foundation and practical guidelines for pricing, there are several distinctive features of the book.Pedagogically, the book takes a quantitative approach to pricing decisions and places a special emphasis on the utilization of data and analytics. Nevertheless, sound intuition and judgments remain a prerequisite.

Book Description
For the past forty years, Richard Koch has worked to uncover simple and elegant principles which govern business success. To qualify, a principle must be so overwhelmingly powerful that anyone can reliably apply it to generate extraordinary results. Working with venture capitalist Greg Lockwood and supported by specially commissioned research from OC&C Strategy Consultants, Koch has now found one elemental principle that unites extraordinarily valuable companies: simplifying. Some firms simplify on price - consider budget flights stripped of all extras that still take you from A to B - creating new, huge mass markets for their wares. Others, such as Apple, simplify their proposition, bringing a beautifully easy-to-use product or service to a large premium market. How can your business become a simplifier? With case studies of some of the most famous firms of the last hundred years, from finance to fast food, this enlightening book shows how to analyse any company's potential to simplify, and enrich the world.

Book Description
Chapter 1: Understanding the Importance of Pricing Strategies Jammy: Hello, Canny! I'm thrilled to have this candid conversation with you about pricing strategies. They play a vital role in the success of any business, and I believe it's essential to understand their importance. Canny: Hi, Jammy! I'm equally excited to learn more about pricing strategies. I've always wondered how businesses decide on the prices of their products and services. Jammy: Well, Canny, pricing strategies are more than just putting a number on a product. They can make or break a business. Effective pricing can boost sales, increase profits, and even create a competitive advantage. Canny: That's fascinating! But how do companies determine the right price for their offerings? Jammy: Excellent question, Canny! Companies consider various factors. First and foremost, they analyze their production and operating costs to ensure they cover expenses while making a profit. They also look at the demand for their products and how customers perceive the value. Canny: I see. So, it's not just about covering costs, but also understanding what customers are willing to pay. Jammy: Absolutely! Pricing is a delicate balancing act. If a company prices too high, they may lose customers to competitors. On the other hand, if the price is too low, they might miss out on potential profits. Canny: It sounds like finding the right pricing strategy is crucial. Are there different types of pricing strategies that companies use? Jammy: Yes, indeed! Companies employ various pricing strategies depending on their goals and the market they operate in. Some common ones include cost-plus pricing, market-oriented pricing, and competitive pricing. Canny: What's cost-plus pricing? Jammy: Cost-plus pricing involves adding a markup to the production cost to set the selling price. It ensures that the company covers all expenses and includes a margin for profit. Canny: And market-oriented pricing? Jammy: Market-oriented pricing focuses on aligning prices with customer perceptions. Companies research their target market to understand what customers are willing to pay and set their prices accordingly. Canny: I see how that can be effective. What about competitive pricing? Jammy: Competitive pricing is all about analyzing what competitors are charging for similar products and setting prices accordingly. It allows companies to stay competitive in the market. Canny: These strategies sound interesting! Is there more to pricing than just setting a number? Jammy: Absolutely! Pricing strategies involve in-depth research, analysis, and continuous monitoring. Companies also need to consider psychological factors that influence customer behavior, like pricing perception and the impact of discounts. Canny: It seems like pricing is a complex but essential aspect of running a business. Jammy: You're absolutely right, Canny! The right pricing strategy can lead to increased sales, higher profits, and long-term success. On the other hand, poor pricing decisions can have severe consequences. Canny: Thank you, Jammy! This conversation has been enlightening. I now understand why pricing strategies are so crucial for businesses. Key Takeaways: Pricing strategies are vital for the success of any business, as they can impact sales, profits, and competitive advantage. Effective pricing involves balancing production costs, customer perceptions, and market demand. Different pricing strategies, such as cost-plus pricing, market-oriented pricing, and competitive pricing, serve various business goals. Psychological factors and the impact of discounts also play a role in pricing decisions. Thorough research, analysis, and continuous monitoring are essential in formulating successful pricing strategies.
