It is important for everyone who reads this to self-reflect and see which type of sophisticated slavery is affecting them, whether they are experiencing issues in their employment or health or trying to discover their purpose. Once that has been discovered, then you can create your own strategy on how you can heal. Please use these various tactics provided to help you heal. Use your support systema friend, counselor, or spiritual counselor or psychiatristto aid you in the process. Once you have healed yourself, then you can also share what you learned with others. The goal is to heal the community. We also encourage other cultures to get involved. This is a group effort, and we can make progress one day at a time. During my spiritual journey and my observations of life, I have always been amazed at what brings us to Gods love. It may be a hardship, a family death, or any kind of separation in the family. This may seem odd, but I have always felt that African American people are blessed and privileged to have had so many hardships. During this adversity and definitely horrific experience, they were forced to rely and depend on God. They just dont know that this was the most awesome support, love, honor, and bonding that anyone can ever experience. I hope anyone who reads this book will be encouraged to use the love of God, your healer and your provider, as a special gift for yourself for anything you ask for in life. I have witnessed the power and support of God. It is more powerful than any amount of money, any amount of success, and any other human gift. Please trust God in everything you do.

This collection of essays surveys the practices, behaviors, and beliefs that developed during slavery in the Western Hemisphere, and the lingering psychological consequences that continue to impact the descendants of enslaved Africans today. The psychological legacies of slavery highlighted in this volume were found independently in Brazil, the U.S., Belize, Jamaica, Colombia, Haiti, and Martinique. They are color prejudice, self and community disdain, denial of trauma, black-on-black violence, survival crime, child beating, underlying African spirituality, and use of music and dance as community psychotherapy. The effects on descendants of slave owners include a belief in white supremacy, dehumanization of self and others, gun violence, and more. Essays also offer solutions for dealing with this vast psychological legacy. Knowledge of the continuing effects of slavery has been used in psychotherapy, family, and group counseling of African slave descendants. Progress in resolving these legacies has been made as well using psychohistory, forensic psychiatry, family social histories, and community mental health. This knowledge is crucial to eventual reconciliation and resolution of the continuing legacies of slavery and the slave trade.

Today most Americans, black and white, identify slavery with cotton, the deep South, and the African-American church. But at the beginning of the nineteenth century, after almost two hundred years of African-American life in mainland North America, few slaves grew cotton, lived in the deep South, or embraced Christianity. Many Thousands Gone traces the evolution of black society from the first arrivals in the early seventeenth century through the Revolution. In Agency of the Enslaved: Jamaica and the Culture of Freedom in the Atlantic World, D.A. Dunkley challenges the notion that enslavement fostered the culture of freedom in the former colonies of Western Europe in the Americas. Dunkley argues the point that the preconception that out of slavery came freedom has discouraged scholars from fully exploring the importance of the agency displayed by enslaved people. This study examines those struggles and argues that these formed the real basis of the culture of freedom in the Atlantic societies. These struggles were not for freedom, but for the acknowledgment of the freedom that enslaved people knew was already theirs. Agency of the Enslaved reveals several major incidents in which the enslaved in Jamaica--a country Dunkley uses as a case study with wider applicability to the Atlantic world--demonstrated that they viewed slavery as an immoral, illegal, unnecessary, temporary, and socially deprecating imposition. These views inspired their attempts to undermine the slave system that the British had established in Jamaica shortly after they captured the island in 1655. Acts of resistance took place throughout the island-colony and were recorded on the sugar plantations and in the courts, schools, and Christian churches. The slaveholders envisaged all of these sites as participants in their attempts to dominate the enslaved people. Regardless, the enslaved had re-envisioned and had used these places as sites of empowerment, and to show that they would never accept the designation of 'slave.'
