How to Train Your Dog with Love + Science
Author: Annie Grossman
Publisher: Sourcebooks, Inc.
ISBN: 1728272815
Category : Pets
Languages : en
Pages : 253
Book Description
Finally: A dog training book that makes sense—for both dogs and humans—using positive reinforcement techniques based on animal behavioral science. For generations, celebrity trainers have preached that dog owners must "dominate" dogs and have criticized people for daring to treat pets with affection. How To Train Your Dog with Love + Science presents a modern and science-based approach to dog training, showing how behavior can be changed without coercion and force. Annie Grossman, a journalist-turned-dog trainer, breaks down what positive reinforcement actually is and makes the case that "good dog training" may even be a window into understanding ourselves. Grossman offers building-block exercises and tips on how to train effectively using the reward-based methods she's honed over the last decade with clients at her Manhattan training center, School For The Dogs. Whether you've just brought a new dog into your home or you're wanting to teach an old one new tricks, How to Train Your Dog with Love + Science will help you consider what behaviors you want and help you to achieve your goals using techniques rooted in the science of behavior. Woven into this lively how-to guide is the century-long history of positive reinforcement training, from Pavlov's dogs and Skinner's rats to today's apartment-dwelling dogs using Wifi-enabled devices. By employing the easy-to-understand techniques laid out in this book, you will be able to train your dog to live confidently, comfortably, and happily in your world.

A View From A Train
Author: Robert Wright
Publisher: Fulton Books, Inc.
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 305
Book Description
After retirement from the military in 2006 and Civil Service in 2008, I spent the next 4 years as an artist, painting murals and other commissions. My job since 2012 was with the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) as an engineer on a commuter train. In May 2017, the Veterans Affairs(VA) diagnosed me with an 80 percent disability, most of which was post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), along with burn pit asthma, tinnitus, and sleep apnea. And still open is a further investigation into the effects of agent orange. The PTSD portion was apparent in my expressed anger. In July 2017, my wife, Carol, was diagnosed with cancer, and I decided to quit work on September 29 to support her. A week before leaving UTA I was given an assignment by a VA therapist to address the PTSD portion of the diagnosis. The assignment was to review the four wars for a single event that gave rise to PTSD. This assignment at the end of September coincided with the last week at the UTA. While operating the train for the last week, I'm revisiting each of the wars looking for the prime cause of my PTSD. This book will speak to anyone underneath a cloud of PTSD. It's not just for those that served in the military. Rather for anyone connected with anyone living with PTSD. This book looks at the political triggers that set PTSD in motion and the spiritual when trying to recover.
