The work in hand identifies, in a theoretical way, the better provision of education and health services, economic growth in urban areas, productivity gains in agriculture, and new non-farm job opportunities in rural areas as mediators accelerating the poverty-reducing effect of urbanization. In a second step, the empirical mediation analysis with country-level data from 1980 to 2013 significantly confirm a poverty-reducing causal mediation effect for all mediators except for new non-farm job opportunities. A comparison of the mediation effect sizes does not clearly identify the most important channel. Nevertheless, the total treatment effect of urbanization on poverty is shown to be significantly positive, smaller for the short than for the long run.

One in seven of the world’s population live in poverty in urban areas, and the vast majority of these live in the Global South – mostly in overcrowded informal settlements with inadequate water, sanitation, health care and schools provision. This book explains how and why the scale and depth of urban poverty is so frequently under-estimated by governments and international agencies worldwide.
