The expense connected with the production of this book had already been heavy, and this contretemps has entailed a further expenditure of so large an amount as to be well-nigh ruinous. All authors have sympathised with Carlyle in the loss of his manuscript, and we can declare from personal experience, in Circumstances which produced in our case a cata strophe almost as serious, that the burden of reproducing lost copy, representing many years of arduous labour and thought, is greater than can be realised, except by those who have had to experience so great a misfortune.
