Book Description
Excerpt from Hoof and Claw The gaunt, black mother lifted her head from nuzzling happily at the velvet fur of her little one. The cub was but twenty-four hours old, and engrossed every emotion of her savage heart; but her ear had caught the sound of heavy footsteps coming up the mountain. They were confident, fearless footsteps, taking no care whatever to disguise themselves, so she knew at once that they were the steps of the only creature that presumed to go so noisily through the great silences. Her heart pounded with anxious suspicion. She gave the cub a reassuring lick, deftly set it aside with her great paws, and thrust her head forth cautiously from the door of the den. Book Description
Excerpt from Neighbors With Claws and Hoofs, and Their Kin: For Boys and Girls As in the other members of the series, the method of the book is inductive. Each division of the subject be gins with the representative animal that is nearest home and most familiar. The cat at the fireside serves as an introduction to the lion and tiger and other cats of the wilds; the kin of the faithful dog is traced in wolf and jackal; and rats and rabbits represent rodents the world over. From the sty, the stable, and the farm-yard, the mind travels out to the homes of the rhinoceros, the ele phant, and the buffalo, in desert, plain, and jungle. Book Description
Excerpt from California for the Sportsman: Being a Collection of Hints as to the Haunts of the Wild Things of Hoof, Claw, Scale and Feather of California's Land and Water Many of the best places for the spring and summer fishing for small steelhead and trout are close to San Francisco and can be fished adequately in a Saturday evening to Monday morning trip. Aside from streams actually reaching the coast, there are many in the valleys of the North Bay region. Meaning the counties immediately north of San Francisco Bay, that hold trout for the catching the year round. On the eastern shore of the southern arm of San Francisco Bay are several streams. At Sunol, on the railroad, is Alameda Creek, and, close by, Calaveras and Indian creeks. These are easily reached by a team, accommodations can be had at Sunol, and the best fishing is in April and May. Many of these waters are the property of a water-supply corporation which conserves the fishing rights. The higher waters of Calaveras Creek may be readily reached from Milpitas, a little farther south on the railroad than Sunol. About six miles from Milpitas, where accommodations and teams may be had, the Calaveras runs through a deep and wild gorge known as the Arroyo Honda. Few fish this fine stretch of rugged country, as it is necessary to take three or four days for the trip and camp in the ravine. The fishing is excellent, the fish of good size. May and June are the best months here. The scenery in the gorge is romantically picturesque. Stevens Creek. Emptying into the bay at the head of the southern arm, is a good provider.
