Book Description
The importance of moving toward a national policy to end homelessness is crucial. In this striking examination of the roles that homeless people and the U.S. government play in causing and curtailing the escalating phenomena of homelessness, Edna Molina-Jackson asserts that there is a great need to alter the socio-economic structures that generate extreme and entrenched forms of poverty that lead to homelessness. Homeless Not Hopeless explores the role social networks play in the daily survival of homeless Latino and African American men. Using a qualitative research design, author Molina-Jackson observes how these men initiate, participate in, and maintain social networks and how these networks function. The findings support a more empowering view of homeless men as active, rational, and competent actors engaged in negotiating their social world. Members rely on social networks composed of a hierarchy of casual and intimate affiliations. The networks of Americanized Latinos and African Americans facilitate their integration into a subculture of street life, while those of recent-immigrant Latinos revolve around their struggles to find work, avoid deportation, and enlist the support of paisanos.

Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 220
Book Description
John Fritz became homeless at age 16. He quit school and became a tramp hitchhiking back and forth across the country. He tried many times to quit drinking and settle down, but he failed each time. His lifestyle resulted in twelve DWI's, and he was checked into treatment centers sixteen times for chemical dependency. He accumulated time in various jails totaling four years of his life, and he spent another four years in the Minnesota penitentiary system. Then he was diagnosed with mental illness. Despite all these stigmas, John somehow turned his life around. His story is laced with funny experiences, colorful characters riding freight trains, and close encounters with death. He was touched by the kindness of strangers again and again. John has an excellent memory and is a natural storyteller. After all of his failures and the things he's been through, readers will be surprised to learn in the final chapter, "Recovery," how John is now living his life.

The Book on Ending Homelessness
Author: Iain De Jong
Publisher: FriesenPress
ISBN: 1525554166
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 104
Book Description
The Book on Ending Homelessness provides insights for those in the industry, elected officials, policy makers, funders, public servants and the general public on the best ways to move from managing homelessness to ending homelessness. While ending homelessness may seem to be a whacky or even preposterous idea, Iain De Jong takes more than two decades of experience as an award winning industry leader to lay out how and why homelessness can be ended in very practical ways. This book will provoke and teach, serving as both inspiration and an instruction manual for those serious about combatting one of the most important social issues of our time. The book will reshape how you think about homelessness, as well as how strategies like sheltering, street outreach and day services all play a role in ending homelessness when operated with a housing-focused lens and the right service orientation. No doubt the book will reassure some that their thinking and actions regarding homelessness are bang on, while challenging others to think and respond differently in what they do and how they invest their money. Many of the ideas in the book elaborate upon ideas that Iain shares in his blog, keynote speeches and conference presentations, as well as the training series that Iain and his team have been offering for the past decade. If you are involved in homelessness issues or concerned about homelessness, this book is essential reading.

The Right Combination: Finding Love and Life After Divorce
Author: Barbie Armenta
Publisher: Kregel Publications
ISBN: 082544568X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 179
Book Description
What if you could have the marriage of your dreams—even when you think it's too late? Everyone wants to have healthy relationships. But too many women who've gone through divorce find themselves feeling lost and unsure about how to move forward into readiness for strong future relationships. Barbie and Richard Armenta both have plenty of brokenness in their pasts. Richard's party lifestyle put him one step away from disaster time and time again. Barbie's two failed marriages and other dating relationships left her desperate for affirmation from men. When they came to Christ, they each had to figure out what it meant to live for Him in their dating lives. It was during this process that they found each other-and discovered that adding God's love to theirs was the right combination for lasting love. For those who have experienced divorce, long to heal emotionally and spiritually, and yearn for true intimacy, The Right Combination is a shout of hope. The Armentas ground their work in Scripture and pose thoughtful questions to women, encouraging them to begin their own process of discovering who they are in Christ and what it really means to live and date God's way.

"Kingdom-Minded" People
Author: Denise Austin
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004222677
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 308
Book Description
During the early twentieth century in China, a number of key economic leaders converted to Christianity. Whilst strongly influenced by cultural heritage, powerful modernizing forces and tumultuous political changes, the new Christian identity inculcated by Protestant missionaries motivated these entrepreneurs to modify their business practices, improve their social environment and extend the influence of Christianity. Protestant and Catholic sojourners likewise made significant contributions into their adopted communities. With unprecedented economic growth in China today, a fascinating contemporary parallel can be seen, particularly through the influence of Pentecostal, charismatic and evangelical training. Previous research has explored the emergence of the urban Christian élite in modern China. However, this systematic study provides new understanding of how Christian identity motivates Chinese business Christians toward economic, social and religious contribution.
