Book Description
Stunning portraits by the renowned Renaissance artist illuminate fascinating figures from the European merchant class, intellectual elite, and court of King Henry VIII. Nobles, ladies, scholars, and merchants were the subjects of Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98–1543), an inventive German artist best known for his dazzling portraits. Holbein developed his signature style in Basel and London amid a rich culture of erudition, self-definition, and love of luxury and wit before becoming court painter to Henry VIII. Accompanying the first major Holbein exhibition in the United States, this catalogue explores his vibrant visual and intellectual approach to personal identity. In addition to reproducing many of the artist's painted and drawn portraits, this volume delves into his relationship with leading intellectuals, such as Erasmus of Rotterdam and Thomas More, as well as his contributions to publishing and book culture, meticulous inscriptions, and ingenious designs for jewels, hat badges, and other exquisite objects. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center from October 19, 2021, to January 9, 2022 and at the Morgan Library & Museum from February 11 to May 15, 2022.

Book Description
Drink like one of the Bright Young Things with Cecil Beaton's Cocktail Book Cecil Beaton (1904-80) was one of the most celebrated British portrait photographers of the 20th century, so renowned for his images of celebrities and high society that his own name has become synonymous with elegance, glamour and style. In the 1920s and '30s, Beaton used his camera, his ambition and his larger-than-life personality to mingle with a flamboyant and rebellious group of artists and writers, socialites and partygoers whose spirit and style cut a dramatic swathe through the epoch. Canonizing the era's "Bright Young Things" in his distinctive brand of opulent studio portraiture, Beaton worked his way up from middle-class suburban schoolboy to glittering society figure. This miniature cocktail book features a delightful array of recipes inspired by the decadent drinks of Beaton's youth, and the fabulous friends and celebrities whom he photographed. Period classics such as the Hanky Panky, Manhatten, Negroni and Sidecar are given contemporary twists by the Head Bartender and Mixologist of the world famous Claridge's Hotel in London, which played host to some of the most extravagant Bright Young gatherings. It is illustrated with the artist's own photographs and the witty and distinctive drawings he produced throughout his life, recording people, travels and experiences, which were featured in Vogue magazine. A must-have for every well-appointed bar cart, Cecil Beaton's Cocktail Book brings to life a deliriously eccentric, glamorous and creative era.

Book Description
Excerpt from Holbein and His Times The history of the art of the Middle Ages and of modern times demands special investigation. An outline is drawn round modern science; it is filled up by degrees as time progresses. An attempt to do this as regards art is the especial object of this work Contemporaries and posterity have eagerly occupied themselves with Albert Durer; but the records transmitted to us of Hans Holbein, the second great painter of his country, are more scanty. Up to the most recent period, his history was veiled in complete obscurity. Ulrich Hegner's work on Holbein, which appeared in 1827, corresponds with the stage at which the history of art at that time stood. It is an excellent guide to the study of the material existing in Basle, yet we must not forget that the author is neither a critical historian nor an experienced judge in artistic matters. Since Hegner s work, the master has been utterly neglected by art-investi-gators. Almost the only notice of permanent value respecting him is that contained in the works of G. F. Waagen, who never made it his special task to pursue historical investigations regarding an artist, but clearly recognized and pointed out all that was peculiar and essential in his creations. Not till late years has this state of things been altered. In England, owing to W. H. Black's archival researches, the discovery was made of the year of Holbein's death, and this was followed by the investigations of Mr. A. W. Franks and Mr. G. Scharf.
