Book Description
Here is the first translation into English of the Basava Purana, a fascinating collection of tales that sums up and characterizes one of the most important and most radical religious groups of South India. The ideas of the Virasaivas, or militant Saivas, are represented in those tales by an intriguing mix of outrageous excess and traditional conservatism. Written in Telugu in the thirteenth century, the Basava Purana is an anthology of legends of Virasaivas saints and a hagiography of Basavesvara, the twelfth-century Virasaiva leader. This translation makes accessible a completely new perspective on this significant religious group. Although Telugu is one of the major cultural traditions of India, with a classical literature reaching back to the eleventh century, until now there has been no translation or exposition of any of the Telugu Virasaiva works in English. The introduction orients the reader to the text and helps in an understanding of the poet's point of view. The author of the Basava Purana, Palkuriki Somanatha, is revered as a saint by Virasaivas in Andhra and Karnataka. His books are regarded as sacred texts, and he is also considered to be a major poet in Telugu and Kannada. Originally published in 1990. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Description
Malangatana is one of Africa's greatest artists. Best known for his dramatic paintings, he has produced a broad range of works in diverse media-drawings, murals, ceramics, and sculptures, as well as poetry and music. For the most part his works are commentaries on the historical and political events in Mozambique, and on the experiences of colonialism, the anti-colonial struggle, civil war, and independence. They also explore broader themes of violence and resistance to violence, capturing the hardships of human life and manifestations of human dignity. This superbly illustrated book of Malangatana's paintings is a showcase of his work. The paintings are accompanied by two introductory essays, one on the artist's biography, the other a critical essay situating the paintings and the importance of his work in context. To date only available in Portuguese, this English-language edition provides the opportunity for a wider audience to gain an in-depth appreciation and understanding of the background and meanings of the paintings.

Robert Holyhead
Author: Robert Holyhead
Publisher: Ridinghouse
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 28
Book Description
This catalogue presents 10 new paintings by the artist Robert Holyhead. His work is marked by expanses of white ground left uncovered and traces of colour at the canvas-edge where paint has been carefully removed from the surface. Some are almost entirely covered with semi-translucent paint, while others are sporadically punctuated by sharply defined, intensely coloured geometric shapes. Accompanying full colour reproductions of these meticulously beautiful works, Anna Lovatt looks at how the paintings explore a limited set of possibilities. She discusses how the work is temporally bounded by the moment of the paint's application and the point at which it begins to dry. Together, the group of paintings demonstrates the surprisingly diverse outcomes of this restricted situation.

Fernando Botero
Author: Edward J. Sullivan
Publisher: Rizzoli International Publications
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 220
Book Description
The drawings and watercolors handsomely illustrated in this volume provide a comprehensive overview of Fernando Botero's work in this media, which has seldom been reproduced. An introductory essay by Prof. Edward J. Sullivan of New York University, and biographical notes complete the catalogue and provide a framework for these superb but less well-known works by Botero. With consummate technical ability, this important twentieth century artist has revived the use of ancient materials: sanguine, charcoal, sepia pencil, wash and ink. Most of his drawings are executed on paper, sometimes on canvas, with great attention paid to the quality of the support. Botero uses a variety of drawing techniques. Some pieces are preparatory drawings for entire compositions - usually quick sketches of a drawing or sculpture - but the majority are independent works of art that rarely, if ever, repeat a composition the artist has executed in oils. Botero draws with affection. Each stroke of the pen or brush is applied with the knowledge that it will create another small but important part of the rich world populated by sensuous figures that has evolved throughout the years in the imagination of the artist. These drawings compel us to confront Botero's art and personality even more directly than in his paintings. In examining them with care, we are privileged to receive a glimpse into the creative mind and fertile imagination of this master. Looking at his drawings we can almost follow the genesis of the artist's ideas. It is as if we were seated at his side in intimate dialogue with him, watching his hand create the simulacra of his inner imagination.
