Its divisions then follow the major periods of the state's history: Before Statehood, State Development, Civil War, Late Nineteenth Century, Early Twentieth Century, and Late Twentieth Century. Substantial sections in this index highlight women's history and African American history, two areas in which scholarship has proliferated during the past two decades. John Ross was born in about 1695 in Scotland. He was a soldier in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 and was transported to America in 1716. He married Sarah and they had ten children. He died in 1759 in Hanover County, Virginia. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Alabama.

Her parents were William John Kelly (1855-1911) and Josephine Lewis (1856-1912). Horace and Vernia were married April 26, 1914 in Carroll County Tennessee. They had three sons who lived to adulthood. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and elsewhere.
