Book Description
Excerpt from History of the New World Called America, Vol. 2 I Probably also on the shores of the great 'moxos Lake, ' which Colonel G. E. Church, in his Presidential Address in the Geographical Section at the meeting of the British Association, 1898, shows to have once existed to the north of the ancient Mediterranean Sea of South America. During four months of the year this lake still partially reappears, covering square miles with water which cannot hnd an exit over the falls of the Madeira river, these falls not being yet sufliciently worn down to give complete drainage to the Moxos basin. The partial disappearance of this lake and the total disappearance of the Argentine sea, Which must have been almost tideless, are due to an upheaval of the earth's crust, so recent that the shells found in the ancient beaches still retain their colour. The plain of Argentina is believed to be still slowly rising; and some part of this vanished sea may well have existed in comparatively recent times - from to years ago. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the New World Called America, Vol. 2 Four centuries after its discovery, America still remains for us the New World; and the title is still justified, for the scroll containing its message to mankind is still being unfolded, and seems never to come to an end. As we pass from the geographical to the ethnographical aspect of the Discovery, it becomes invested with greater interest. That a continent half as large as the Old World, and peopled in every part, existed across the Atlantic was a surprising revelation. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the New World Called America, Vol. 1 The writer has been sparing in making corrections in the received etymology of American names but the start ling absurdity which marks the current explanations of some important ones, such as Titicaca, Cuzco, and Mexico, has led him to indicate what he believes to be their true meaning (pp. 295, 405, which is in each case based upon some early authority. In the case of Mexico, the name appears to be one among several indications of a previous occupation of the site by the Otomi aborigines the derivation from the Otomi me/te (a spring) is founded upon an explicit statement twice made by Gomara, who undoubtedly had good authority for making it 1. Book Description
Excerpt from The New America and the Fast East, Vol. 2 During that period, we have changed from one of the weakest to the most powerful nation on the globe. Fifty years ago, the monarchs who governed what were then the leading nations of the earth established diplomatic relations with scarcely a thought of the young republic on the western shore of the Atlantic. N ow, the powerful nations of the world seek our friendship, and none venture any important diplomacy without first learning whether it will be acceptable to this great republic. Book Description
Excerpt from The Homes of the New World, Vol. 2 of 2: Impressions of America While the savage nations were carrying on cruel wars one with another, and converting all the paths through the forest of the West into paths of death, the Bishop of Quebec, Francis de Laval, was animated by the desire of conveying the doctrines of peace to the shores of the Great River. He desired to go himself; but the lot fell on Rene Mesnard. Every personal consideration seemed to retain him at Quebec, but powerful instincts urged him to risk his life in the enterprise. He was already old when he entered on the path still red with the blood of his prede cessors. In three or four months, wrote he to a friend, on his journey, and you may add my name to those of the dead.
