The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) completed a hundred years in December 2020. In December 1920, the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental (MAO) College founded by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1877, was transformed into AMU. Sir Syed also established the All India Mohammedan Educational Conference to infuse the subcontinent's Muslims with a spirit of modernism. The Hindu–Muslim conflict was a major problem during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. This book shows how Mahatma Gandhi resolved the conflict and even united the Hindus and the Muslims. It presents a detailed introduction to the Khilafat (Pan-Islamist) movement, a venture that Gandhi supported wholeheartedly. The discussion looks at Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement, which, he believed, could help bridge the gap between the two communities. Religion-based educational disparities, especially relative educational backwardness amongst the Muslims in India, are the focus of serious debate. The 2006 Sachar Committee Report rekindled public interest and attention in this important issue. Yet, considerable gaps exist in our understanding of the dynamics of religion and access to education. In Religion, Community, and Education, Alam uses a spatial approach and multilayered analytical framework to understand educational disparities in schooling between the Hindus and Muslims in Bihar. The study draws upon national-level data as well as focused fieldwork carried out in Bihar's Patna and Purnia districts. This book highlights the larger historical trajectories that have shaped educational development as well as the forms of disparities therein vis-à-vis the minorities in India. It contends that the relative educational backwardness of the Muslims reflects underlying socio-economic patterns that are often overlooked. Modern Sikh Studies in Punjab History and Historiography had its roots in the British political and diplomatic interest about the Sikh military and social rise in North India by the close of the Eighteenth Century. John Malcolm and Charles T. Metcalfe dealt with the Sikh misaldars between 1803 and 1804 A.D. Like Murray, H.T. Prinsep wade under William Bentinck (1828-1835) took interest in Sikh political formations and the Khalsa traditions. J.D. Cunningham wrote his book entitled History of the Sikh in 1849.
