Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Class of 1912, Yale College, Vol. 1 The Class of 1912 has completed its preparatory life - the first stage in every man's career. Thus far we have traveled about the same path as that taken by all the sons of Yale preceding us. We have been about as green as previous Freshmen and attained the dignity and honor of previous Seniors. Our future life has been fortified by failures, experienced and powerfully strengthened by ties of friendship which time can never rend asunder. F rom this moment our paths separate as each man strives to. Gain the goal of his ambi tion. What success we of 1912 are to attain as individuals and what permanent imprint we are to leave upon the world to distinguish us from other classes, the next forty years will determine. As time progresses may each one of us warm both hands before the fire of life, and further, may it be said of us as Lincoln wished it might be said of him, that he plucked a weed and planted a flower, where he thought a flower would grow. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Class of 1910, Vol. 1: Yale College It is not unusual for a class history to be a mere eulogy of its members. It will be prefaced perhaps by laudatory remarks hailing the new class, even in its earliest appearance as Freshmen, as the greatest that has ever come to Yale. To greet 1910 in a similar way, however, would be not only conventional but also bromidic. Too many have already sung its praises to add unneces sary comment. Let its records as narrated in these pages stand for themselves. Such modesty is but a shield to cover our own personal opinions, to which we all assuredly have a right, and first among our retrospective thoughts is that September 26, 1906, will always stand out conspicuously in the annals of Yale; for it was on that day the Class of 1910 made its advent to New Haven. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Class of 1906, Yale College, Vol. 1 The preparation of the Book which is now submitted to the Class has been a pleasurable work. The hearty cooperation of all has made it really a Class Book, as well as a Class History. Much is due, also, to the valuable suggestions received from the Secretaries of the Classes of 1903 and 1905, and to the constant help of the Dean of the college, and Professor W. B. Bailey. To Mr. Thompson, of the Alumni Weekly, for his aid, to C. W. Somers for drawings, and to the men who have assisted in the statistical and subscription work, we express thanks. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Class of 1911, Yale College, Vol. 1 These Titanic struggles, which took place in a ring encircled by row upon row of excited, derisive, and sympathetic classmates and upper classmen, called forth the ablest gladiatorial talent from both our ranks and those of the Sophomores\ The college walls even now faintly re-echo the wild paeans of conquest with which our triumphant class rent the startled, tobacco-ridden air, when victory folded her airy pinions and alighted on our standards. Bartlett won over Sweeney; and although Livingston lost to Bradley, the mettle of 1911 when first tried was not found wanting, when Bill Prime overthrew Roberts in the final bout. In this victory the class of 1911 had taken the first step in its triumphant march toward the exalted position it later occupied in the college world. Book Description
Excerpt from Quarter-Century Record of the Class of Eighteen-Eighty-Seven, Yale College: 1887 1912 The unwritten law requires that somewhere between the covers of an '87 Class report there shall be found a bird's-eye View of the Class as a whole, showing its collective progress, its place in the greater army of Yale men, suggesting who wear the uniforms of commissioned and non - commissioned officers and how those men who march in the ranks meet the brunt of battle and the fatigue of the hike. The ranks of our division of the Yale army are not as full as they were in 1887, for there have fallen by the way nineteen and three-tenths per cent of all those who started-together from Center Church in June of that year. In other words, of the one hundred and fifty graduates, twenty-nine are known to have died, and one hundred and twenty-one are enrolled as living members. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Class of 1906, Yale College, Vol. 2 I heard it said that far away from here, on the wrong side of the deserts of Cathay and in a country dedicate to winter, are all the years that are dead. And there a certain valley shuts them in and hides them, as rumor has it, from the world, but not from the sight of the moon nor from those that dream in his rays. And I said: I will go from here by ways of dream, and I will come to that valley and enter in and mourn there for the good years that are dead. And I said: I will take a wreath, a wreath of mourning, and lay it at their feet in token of my sorrow for their dooms. And when I sought about among the flowers, among the flowers for my wreath of mourning, the lily looked too large and the laurel looked too solemn, and I found nothing frail enough nor slender to serve as an offering to the years that were dead. And at last I made a slender wreath of daisies in the manner that I had seen them made in one of the years that is dead. This, said I, is scarce less fragile or less frail than one of those deli cate, forgotten years. Then I took my wreath in my hand and went from here. And when I had come by paths of mystery to that romantic land where the valley that rumor told of lies close to the mountainous moon, I searched among the grass for those poor slight years for whom I brought my sorrow and my wreath. And when I found there nothing in the grass, I said: Time has shattered them and swept them away and left not even any faint remains. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Class of 1868, Yale College, 1864-1914 This book, without doubt the last that will be issued by Sixty-eight, has been prepared especially for the members of the class and their families. It contains the history of the class since its admission to college in the fall of 1864, and includes biographical sketches of all its members, graduate and non-graduate. For the sake of completeness, the important parts of previous class histories have been retained in this. Class mates who died early have not been forgotten, but have been considered just as worthy of a place in the book as those who have been blessed with a longer life.
