JSSpSgURING the middle ages conventual churches and iSlMpj chapter-houses were much used as places of inSissicS torment for persons of rank and opulence; and large bequests were frequently made to monastic establishments, on the condition that the remains of the donor should be buried within the sacred precincts. The Abbey Church of Holyrood appears to have been the last restingplace of many of the great of former times; but the destruction of the choir and transepts included also the demolition of many of the more ancient memorials of the departed. We are informed that within this church were deposited the remains of David the Second, James the Second, and James the Fifth, Kings of Scotland, Magdalene of France, the queen of the last, and several youthful members of the blood-royal. Of the tomb of David, however, which was built of stone brought from Flanders, not a vestige remains.* The precise spot where James II. was interred is rather a doubtful matter; and the early history of the present Royal vault, at the south-east corner of the church, is involved in considerable obscurity. We have already described the wanton destruction of its coffins by the infuriated multitude in 1688. In the circum* Fi'&NoteC. stances, therefore, it is fortunate that there is preserved in the Advocates' Library a manuscript, containing an authentic account of a search made in the vault by authorised persons, about seven years prior to the sacriligious violation of its mouldering relics of Scottish royalty. The narrative of the inquisition is as follows: -- "Upon ye xxiv of January MDCLXXXIII. by procurement of ye Bischop of Dumblayne, I went into ane vault in ye southeast corner of ye Abbey church of Halyrudehouse, and yr. were present, ye Lo...
