The 5th Battalion of the 60th (Royal American) Regiment was the first rifle battalion in the regular British Army. Raised in 1797, it marked a significant step in the development of British light infantry and rifle corps. Lieutenant Colonel Francis de Rottenburg, the battalion's commander for almost 10 years, formulated the first British Army light infantry manual. After serving in Ireland during the 1798 rebellion, in the West Indies, and in the Americas, the battalion rose to fame during the Peninsular War. It was one of only three battalions to be present from the initial landings in Portugal through to the invasion of France, and victory six years later. Divided between the brigades of Wellington's army to provide specialist rifle and skirmishing capability, the riflemen often formed advance or rear guards, patrols and outposts. Frequently praised by Wellington and his divisional commanders, the battalion won 16 battle honors. Drawing on official records, memoirs, court martial transcripts, inspection reports, and unpublished letters, Riflemen recounts not only the campaigns in which the battalion fought, but also many personal stories of the soldiers who served with it. Riflemen includes tales of murder, promotion from the ranks, desertion, prisoners of war, and small actions that are often overlooked. The Vietnam War, and Australia’s part in it, was a major military event, calling for willingness to face death and destruction on the battlefield on the part of those sent there, especially the men of our infantry battalions who formed the spearhead of our forces in Vietnam. A compact and competent history of this Indian Army unit, first raised in the Punjab in the 1840s. It was intended for internal security work and to guard the always turbulent North-West Frontier. Its first active operations, however, were in helping to quell the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58. Under Gen. Sir Hope Grant it served at Mardan, Lucknow and through Oude, ending up on the border with Nepal. After the Mutiny, it became part of the Punjab Frontier Force. It took part in the second Afghan War as part of the Kurram Valley Field Force, fighting at the Peiwar Kotal, Charasia, Deh-Afghana and defending the Sherpur Cantonment. In the 1880s it operated against the Mahsud tribesmen. During the Great War, the regiment sailed for France and fought at the 1915 battles of Festubert, Neuve Chapelle, and Aubers Ridge. It was then ordered to Egypt, and took part in the Palestine campaign, helping to occupy Jerusalem. In the 1920s the unit took part in operations against Afghanistan and the Waziris. The text of this book is accompanied by five appendices with awards and Rolls of Honour from the Great War and Indian operations. There are 13 illustrations and six maps.
