Excerpt: ...every Companion arose to his feet and commenced claiming hands, which continued without the slightest intermission while our venerable Companion passed around the room and out of sight in the corridor of the hotel. It was an ovation the like of which was never known, and which will ever be remembered by those who were so fortunate as to witness and take part in it. Companion William H. Burkhardt was elected High Priest, and Companion William H. List, Secretary. There were forty-two marked this year, fifty-seven received and acknowledged, and fifty-two exalted; a falling off from previous years, doubtless by reason of the change in the Hy-Laws in the last year. In the three years 1870-1 and 2, there were two hundred and fifty-two brothers exalted. Your historian was Principal Sojourner during those years and takes pride in the fact that, with the exception of one trio, he personally conducted all of them through the ceremonies of the degree, and challenges any Principal Sojourner in all Royal Arch Masonry to show a similar record. The total investments of the Chapter at this time were $6,575, all in Masonic loan. January 3, 1873, the Auditing Committee reported an excess in the Treasurer's hands of one hundred and fifty-five dollars over the credits given to members in the cash book, and asked that a committee be appointed to adjust the matter as can best be done in the interest of the Chapter and its members, and recommending an entirely new set of account books for the use of the Secretary. The Committee "trust that no Companion will infer censure on our late and much esteemed officer. Impressed with the conviction that too much labor devolved on our noble Companion in view of his advanced life, the Committee unhesitatingly pass...
