Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania The school which now bears the title of University of Penn sylvania had been in existence, first as a simple academy and afterwards as a college, for nearly sixteen years, before a sys tem of medical instruction was admitted into its plan. This event may be considered as having taken place on the 3d of May, 1765 - the date at which the first medical professor was appointed. No school of medicine at that time existed in the country; and the College of Philadelphia undoubtedly deserves the credit of having opened this new path of liberal study in America. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, From Its Foundation in 1765: With Sketches of the Lives of Deceased Professors Without detailing the numerous instances Of enterprise in this direction, or the circumstances attending their varied fortune, it will be pertinent to the subject Of present interest to state prominently the fact, that Of all the races who have been thus distinguished, not one has been more successful than that branch of the Teutonic stock from which we are lineally descended. Conqueror of the Roman Empire, and the legitimate inheritor of its glory, the race Of Teutons has sent its sons broadcast over the earth, and has its offshoots. Book Description
Excerpt from Report on the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, for the Session 1850-1851, to the Alumni of the School The Faculty will be excused for this somewhat prolonged reference to their own concerns, when it is considered that these concerns, so far as they have hitherto Occupied our attention, are also those of the profession generally. They have no intention to set forth any peou liar advantages which the School may be supposed to possess. These, as well as the qualifications of the teachers, will be judged of by the impression they may make on others, rather than by the representa tions of the interested party. In conclusion, therefore, they have only to say, that, whatever may be thought of the Opportunities they have to offer, of this their friends may be assured, that their most zealous efforts will be directed to the improvement of the young men who may come under their tuition, and, through them, to the elevation of the profession of which they are to form a part.
