Book Description
Excerpt from Historical Legends of Northamptonshire The following sketches were originally written, for the most part while the Author was resident in Northamptonshire, with a view merely to filling an occasional column of a newspaper. Many of them subsequently appeared in the Northampton Mercury, and it was only in consequence of the interest they then excited that the Author was induced to issue them in book form. This brief statement is necessary to explain some faults of style and construction arising out of the form in which the various Legends were originally cast, and in great measure published. In other respects they have been carefully revised and corrected. The collection would have been much larger but for an accident to which the best regulated Authors copy is liable, especially when at the mercy of occasional Arctic frosts - and still worse - sublunary plumbers. However, the disaster is not irremediable, and if this small budget receive favourable attention, the rest may follow in time.
