Book Description
The legislative road to having one of the best fish hatcheries in the nation began for Kansas in 1877, when the first Kansas Commissioner of Fisheries encouraged laws "for the protection of the finny tribes occupying the waters of their state." More than 40 years later, the Wichita Daily Eagle would proclaim, "Kansas Has the Best Fish Hatchery in the World at Pratt." Read a short history of the Fish Hatchery by Donna Casement at the State Library of Kansas' KGI Online Library Blog.

Book Description
On May 25th, 1946, after 22 years as a congressional secretary, Jane Pratt was elected as North Carolina's first congresswoman. The press reported with great interest how "Miss Jane" won by a landslide with only a $100 campaign budget. She hit the ground running, voting to the pass the Atomic Energy Act, working tirelessly to mitigate a century of flood disasters in western North Carolina, and serving the constituents she knew so well. This first biography of Congresswoman Jane Pratt recounts her youth and fascinating career on Capitol Hill. It also provides a unique federal view of North Carolina's early 20th century history. After working as a rare female newspaper editor in the early 1920s, Pratt became secretary to five tarheel congressmen over some 30 years. Her career spanned the roaring twenties, the Great Depression, World War II, and the Cold War. Pratt's amazing network was a who's who of leaders in North Carolina and Washington, DC. Her decision not to run for re-election offers insight into why 46 years passed before the state elected another woman to Congress.

Book Description
"The following study was undertaken at the suggestion of Mr. J.B. Doze, state fish and game warden, in charge of the State Fish Hatchery at Pratt, Kan. The State Hatchery at Pratt consists of 112 ponds, varying in size from one-fifth acre to one and one-half acres, and supplied by water from the South Ninnescah river. During the past years it has been noted that some of these ponds have consistently a much higher fish productivity per acre than others. In order to operate the hatchery at its highest efficiency, Mr. Doze desired to ascertain the reason for this high productivity of some ponds and low productivity of others, with a view to changing conditions so as to render all ponds like those now producing the most fish"--Page 5
