Orientalism & Occidentalism
Author: Robin D. Gill
Publisher: Paraverse Press
ISBN: 9780974261829
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
1. Identity - collective -- Japan 2. Orientalism -- Occidentalism 3. Intercultural communication - stereotypes 4. Translation theory - Japanese/English 5. Japanese - sociolinguistics Languages exotic to one another, such as English and Japanese, create false images of their respective speakers which form and confirm stereotypes that can be denied by Cultural Relativism but not disproved, much less vanquished. Being in denial is not the same as being cured. This book, like the author's seven books published in Japan/ese, treats prejudice by uncovering its roots and exposing them to the healthy light of reason. At the same time, it rethinks Orientalism together with Occidentalism by including the Sinosphere's perspective of what is East and West. While students of translation, sociolinguistics and cross-cultural studies may benefit most from the discussion (there are copious notes and indices of names and of ideas), the heart of the work is pure essay, "a work of travel by the path of language" that "leads us through delicious nuances . . . into important mysteries." Robin D. Gill is an American, who began to study Japanese as an adult and published his first seven books in that language while working as an acquisitions editor and translation checker of fine nonfiction for Japanese publishers. His most recent book, and first in English, Rise, Ye Sea Slugs! boasts close to 1000 holothurian haiku. The three most common adjectives used by reviewers describing him and his work are "eclectic," "erudite" and "fun."

Adams The Pilot
Author: William Corr
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136638113
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
This book charts the life and times of Captain William Adams who lived in the period of 1564 to 1620. Adam himself wrote little; his letters and logs, while vivid and valuable, would convey too little about the eventful years between 1600 and 1620 on their own. Other sources, such as thevarious writings of other Europeans in Japan, complete the tale. Including mentions of significant historical events, for example in 1588 William Adams commands a supply ship, the ‘Richard Dygylde’, at the time of Philip II of Spain's attempted invasion of England, the Enterprise of England (the Spanish Armada) and in 1600 The first Dutch ship (Liefde) arrives in Japan. William Adams is taken before Tokugawa Leyasu and questioned;he explains that Holland and England are at war with Spain and Portugal. Leyasu declines the Portuguese suggestion that he execute the Liefde's crew.

Japan-Netherlands Trade 1600-1800
Author: Yasuko Suzuki
Publisher: Apollo Books
ISBN: 9781920901516
Category : Japan
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
In the early modern period, relations between the Netherlands and Japan were founded on trade. The Dutch United East India Company operated in Japan for over 100 years, from 1609 to the early 18th century. The Dutch-Japanese relationship - built sometimes on understanding and at other times on resentment - is recorded in great detail in the trade-related archives of the period. This book closely examines these documents to reveal the changing market conditions of the main commodities exported by the Dutch from Japan at the time: silver, koban (gold), copper, and camphor. This analysis of both Dutch and Japanese perspectives on the trade market forms an intricate picture of the cultural, political, and economic context of trade between the Netherlands and Japan in the early modern period. *** "...many useful tables and charts in this book, which economic historians of Japan and Asian trade networks will be able to use in the future." - Journal of Japanese Studies, Vol. 39:2, 2013
