In 1903 Hubbard's husband, Leonidas, starved to death on his cartographic and ethnographic expedition to Labrador. Hubbard decided to complete her husband's work, becoming a skilled explorer and cartographer in her own right. She set out in July 1905 and with the help of George Elson, a Métis guide who had been employed by her husband on the original trip, and three other guides completed her expedition in record time with significant results, including completing the first accurate map of the Labrador river system, thus correcting the earlier map that had led to her husband's death. Her original photographs and the map are reproduced in this volume.

This anthology aims to challenge stereotypes of women travellers. Rather than simply presenting writings by Victorian women who travelled bravely around the world disregarding social convention and danger, the editors present a range of writing and possible ways of being a woman traveller. As well as the 'eccentric' woman traveller, the editors have included writings by those who might be seen as failed travellers, cautious and conventional travellers and those who did not conform to the adventurous heroine stereotype. Because travelling as a woman and writing as a woman presents the author with a number of textual problems which must be negotiated, Foster and Mills have chosen to include writings which confronted these problems and which resolved them (or did not resolve them) in different ways.These textual problems include the depiction of other women, the representation of spatial relations, the negotiations undertaken in relation to the adventure heroine narrative and character and the position taken by the author in relation to the representation of knowledge. In Agatha! Agatha Snow Abroad: A Sketch Book from her 1912 EuropeanTour, Lukesh presents and explores the original images and brief comments, pulling threads to explore what the often-cryptic comments mean. Agatha! also explores the people she and her friends met and briefly traveled with, and what happened to the various players in this trip after it ended as the world moved into the first World War and even beyond. Although their steam ship left New York harbor barely two days after the Titanic sank and before the survivors arrived, no recorded comments from the passage to Europe mention the tragedy. Contemporary postcards and one early 19th c print complement Agatha's drawings and show how close her small sketches came to the actual sites she portrayed. The small sketch book, not even four by six inches, presents images—some with incredible detail that is best seen when the original image is enlarged, causing a reader to shake his or her head and wonder how she did it. Her favorite subjects are people and as many folks who travel know part of the fascination and interest in travel is encountering people who are quite different from those we know at home. And certainly, Agatha's images, in fact caricatures, of people capture and convey her clear fascination with the people she encountered. Agatha! supplements Agatha's comments and descriptions with diary entries and letters sent home by other contemporary accounts further enriching what may first appear as a meager offering, if judged only by size. Agatha’s sketch book, and the exploration of it, offer a snapshot of life in the early 1900s during the Edwardian era—where and how folks traveled, what travelers discussed, what they did, and what they ate. Lukesh also traveled on a couple occasions to some of the very places that Agatha and companions visited. On one occasion, she found herself traveling in one of the railway cars and on the very line—both now under restoration—that Agatha and companions traveled in England. Also, in England, she traveled to see Warwick where Agatha had seen and drawn two wonderful sketches of men on the streets of that fine historic town. Agatha! not only presents the original sketches and brief comments from over 100 years ago, but includes solutions to puzzles that Agatha left us, such as what is the story of Mrs. Campbell and the Cockroaches in the Cabin, what is A.B.C., and what are horse-tail guards? Agatha!fulfills a reader's need to know what happened to the folks Agatha met and now the readers meet on the trip—both those on the ship passages to and from Europe and those met along the way in Europe. As much as possible, using public records, the lives of some of them after the trip, through World War 1 and the years after, are traced, as are the fates of the ships that carried the travelers. Not every puzzle has been solved, leaving some for readers, but many are, with great thanks to internet resources these days and Lukesh's ability to use public records for genealogical purposes and answers. A final bonus in Agatha! For decades Lukesh excavated and studied the things left behind by prehistoric folks in Southern Italy and Sicily. Today her attention has turned to things left behind by her ancestors. From a gold bracelet she wears, to an 1860s photo album, and to this sketch book of her great aunt Agatha. This exploration of a tour by four women in their 20s over 100 years ago gives insight on restoring pieces of family history based on things left behind, offering a template for organizing similar genealogy research.

The years between 1870 and 1940 are often considered a 'golden age' of travel: as larger and evermore sumptuous ships and trains were built, including the Orient Express, Blue Train, Lusitania and Normandie, journeying abroad became, and remains today, synonymous with chic, splendour and luxury. Utilising women's diaries and letters, art, advertising, fiction and etiquette guides, this book considers the journey's impact upon understandings of female identity, definitions of femininity, modernity, glamour, class, travel, tourism, leisure and sexual opportunity and threat during this period. It explores women's relationship with train and ship technology; cultural understandings of the journey; public expectations of women journeyers; how women journeyed in practice: their use of journey space, sociability with both Western and 'Other' non-Western journeyers, experience of love, sex and danger during the journey; and how women fashioned a journeyer identity which fused their existing domestic identities with new journey identities such as the journey chronicler. The journey is revealed to be an experience of sociability as much as mobility, dominated by ideas of respectability and reputation, class, power, vision and observation and home as well as the foreign and new.

Beginning with the publication of the first Murray guidebook to Greece in 1840 and ending with Virginia Woolf's journey to Athens, this book offers a genealogy of British women's travel literature about Greece. Churnjeet Mahn recounts the women's first-hand experiences of the sites and sights of antiquity, analyzing travel accounts by archaeologists, ethnographers, journalists, and tourists to chart women's renderings of Modern Greece through a series of discursive lenses. Mahn's offers insights into the importance of the Murray and Baedeker guidebooks; how knowledge of Greece and Classical Studies were used to justify colonial rule of India at the same time that Agnes Smith Lewis and Jane Ellen Harrison used Greece as a symbol of women's emancipation; British women's production of the first anthropological accounts of Modern Greece; and fin-de-siècle women who asserted their right to see and claim antiquity at the same time that the safety of the independent lady traveler was being called into question by the media.
