Book Description
Excerpt from Hints on the Interpretation of Prophecy No apology is necessary for engaging in the investigation of the subjects, which are briefly treated of in the following sheets. These matters are of deep interest to every inquiring Christian; and the character of the Scriptures, in the view of the world, is in no small degree concerned with them. Unbelievers reproach us with giving credit to a book which is full of enigmas, and allege that every one interprets it according to his own fancy, and so as to support his own particular opinions. Nor is this all. They even charge ambiguity upon the Scriptures themselves; and they are apparently moved to do this, by the ever varying, discrepant, and sometimes even opposite conclusions of expositors. No book, they say, which is plainly and honestly written, could possibly afford room for such diversity of opinion. Particularly have such charges been made against the prophecies. These have been compared to the ambiguous vaticinations of the heathen oracles, and pronounced to be deserving of merely the same credit which is given to them by enlightened minds. Book Description
Excerpt from Miller's Reply to Stuart's "Hints on the Interpretation of Prophecy" In Three Letters, Addressed to Joshua V. Himes In his second part, as I have named it, Pro phecy not intelligible until it is fulfilled, I am pleased to see our views so perfectly harmonize. I say with the writer, if God has revealed any truth, that truth may be understood; but I would not say, neither doi understand the writer of this book to say, that men will all see the truth and know it, and in all ages of the world, and at all times. No, for if that were the case, we should have no need of this book which he has written to teach us how to understand prophecy. Although God may have revealed things plainly and intelligibly, yet it may by us be rejected, or clothed in a mantle of mysticism, and so hid for ages, for aught I can see, and then brought to light by the diligent application of some of his ser vants. Surely, the writer will not deny this, for his object in writing this book is, as he says, to do away with an error, that has for years be come almost or quite universal. So, you can see, we are happily and clearly agreed on this pomt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Guide to the Prophecies: With Reference to Their Interpretation and Fulfilment, and to Personal Edification The original design of this work (first published in 1828, under the title of Practical Remarks on the was to answer objections made to missionary exertions from particular views of prophecy, and to show that all Christians had a clear title to the spiritual promises of the Old Testament. As subsequent editions have been called for, the Author has been led on to a more extensive study of the subject of Prophecy than he anticipated, and has endeavoured to take a general view of the whole of that important part of divine truth. The earnestness of the prophets, enquiring and searching diligently what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ signified, 1 Peter i. 10, 11 and the weeping much of the favoured apostle when no man was found worthy to open the sealed book, Rev. V. 4, reprove that neglect and indifference with which too many Christians have hitherto regarded this truly scriptural and edifying subject. The Author cannot but hope that this neglect is passing away, and giving place to an increased attention. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Interpreting the Prophecies: Briefly Illustrated and Applied With Notes It is a fact too painfully known to admit dispute, that for some, cause, the Prophetical writings of both the Old and New Testaments, are at present comparatively but little read and less understood; while their quickness and power, as means of grace, are but little experienced by a vast proportion even of hopeful Christians. Since it is, therefore, thus appa rent, that the Prophecies have so far lost their original con verting and sanctifying power, it must be considered alto gether suitable for the friends Of God and the Bible, to inquire into, and, if possible, search out the true cause why these things are so, and to devise some effectual remedy against the evil. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Prophetical Interpretation I ought likewise to apologize for some inadvertencies and repetitions which will be found in the work. These must be placed to the account of the large demands which have been made upon my time from other quarters during its progress, and which have frequently not only distracted my attention, but drawn largely, I fear, upon your patience and that of the much respected publishers of the work. And after all, my dear friend, I cannot but feel, that you have entrusted this important work to very feeble hands; and that the reader will not only speedily discover this, but marvel that you have not rather undertaken it yourself. Had I been aware, indeed, before I was well advanced in it, that your Practical Remarks on the Prophecies would have been so greatly enlarged as they have been subsequently in your Practical Guide, I should altogether have declined the undertaking, and have urged you instead to have still more largely extended that publication; which I am persuaded would have been far more acceptable and instructive to the religious public, than any thing that can be advanced by me. Book Description
Excerpt from The Historic Meaning of Prophecy The greater portion of the prophecies by far refer to the coming -day cycle, which is the era that contains the seven trumpets. John is the only prophet who men tions the seven seals and the seven trumpets; but the Old Testament prophets also wrote about those eras that John describes. The seven seals and the seven trumpets extend from the beginning of the Christian era to the beginning of the Millennial era. Prophecy is most profuse upon the sixth seal and sixth trumpet. Some prophets describe the progress of the Church, others describe the progress of Gentile dominion in the powers of the world, and others describe the progress of Antichrist, the minor prophets generally dwelling upon some particular eras. The major prophets describe the Church, the world powers, and the Antichrist by turns. The Bible method has been observed in this work by giving a description of the two spiritual powers in separate chapters. These are the best general suggestions that can be given, except the one most important of all, and that is the aid of the Holy Spirit. The person who reads prophecy as he reads history fails to apprehend it as a revelation from God. But it is even more than that: it is a revela tion of God; for that is the purpose of inspired revelation. Book Description
Biblical prophecy comprises one of the most rewarding topics of Bible study. Difficulty of subject matter and unfamiliarity with the literary forms, however, deter many students. 'Back Toward the Future' removes these obstacles and invites exploration of this exciting subject. The author, a respected expert in the field, presents an introductory guide to the issues and methods of interpreting prophetic literature. The principles he formulates, coupled with his mature insights, will help students avoid many exegetical pitfalls. Part I helps the reader to discern conditional and unconditional prophecies, comprehend apocalyptic symbols, and understand future events in expressions of the past. Part 2 provides specific steps for interpreting prophetic passages. And Part 3 discourages Bible students from finding double meanings in prophetic statements and encourages them to embrace the author's single-truth intention. A Scripture index concludes 'Back Toward the Future'.
