Book Description
An intimate and bibliophilic artist monograph of the German Expressionist Hermann Stenner. Hermann Stenner (1891-1914) was one of the most remarkable talents of the twentieth century. His promising career was cut short death by his death in battle in World War I, when he was twenty-three. Stenner's body of work is all the more impressive because of the compressed time frame in which it was produced--just five years of study and creative work. After attending painting classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, he transferred to study under the painter Adolf Hölzel, becoming the artist's master student in 1912. In addition to the "Hölzel Circle," Stenner also belonged to the circle of Westphalian Expressionists, which included artists such as Peter August Böckstiegel, Else Lohmann, August Macke, and Carlo Mense. By 1913, Stenner was already participating in important exhibitions in Germany and abroad alongside artists like Egon Schiele and Max Slevogt. In 1914, only a few months before he died in the war, he executed a cycle of wall paintings in the entrance hall of the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne with artists Oskar Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister. This artist's remarkable oeuvre, which includes 280 paintings and more than 1,500 drawings, has recently attracted new critical attention. This publication celebrates the great rediscovery of one of the pioneers of German Expressionism.

Book Description
Many modernist artists in the early years of the 20th century preferred solitary lives, but just as many thrived in small, nebulous groups, such as the Futurists & Imagists. Cohen demonstrates how these groups fostered artistic innovation & bore responsibility for nearly all avante-garde agitation.

Book Description
German art student Otto Schubert was 22 years old when he was drafted into the Great War. As the conflict unfolded, he painted a series of postcards that he sent to his sweetheart, Irma. During the battles of Ypres and Verdun, Schubert filled dozens of military-issued 4†? x 6†? cards with vivid images depicting the daily realities and tragedies of war. Beautifully illustrated with full-color reproductions of his exquisite postcards, as well as his wartime sketches, woodcuts, and two lithograph portfolios, Postcards from the Trenches is Schubert's war diary, love journal, and life story. His powerful artworks illuminate and document in a visual language the truths of war. Postcards from the Trenches offers the first full account of Otto Schubert, soldier-artist of the Great War, rising art star in the 1920s, prolific graphic artist and book illustrator, one of the "degenerate†? artists defamed by the Nazis, and a man shattered by the Second World War and the Cold War. Created in the midst of enormous devastation, Schubert's haunting visual missives are as powerful and relevant today as they were a century ago. His postcards are both a young man's token of love and longing and a soldier's testimony of the Great War. **Please note that this will work best on a colour device**

Book Description
This is the first book to relate to the literature and art of the First World War to the literature and art produced by the Second World War and by earlier wars. A Muse of Fire is also the first serious attempt to examine the whole range of war poetry and war fiction in English in its relation to the work of German, French, Italian and - to a lesser extent - Russian, Danish, and Hungarian authors. Before 1914 few authors wrote about or experienced war. War, especially its reality, was not the proper subject of literature; while writers seldom served in the armed forces and were almost never in battle. More than half this book deals with the First World War. In successive chapters A.D. Harvey discusses what sort of people, in what sort of physical and psychological conditions, wrote about the war; or painted it; how they handled the challenge of describing their experiences with complete honesty; what literary and artistic techniques they employed; how other forms of creative talent were fostered by the war; and how far memoirs of the war prepared the way for the next one. The account given of the Second World War in the final section, like the chapters on pre-1914 war literature, provides far more than simply an introduction and conclusion to the central part of the book. It is an important contribution to an understanding of how literature and art relate to the psychological and social structures of the communities within which they are produced. Book Description
00Exhibition: Kunsthalle Kiel, Germany (11.10.2014-08.02.2015).

Book Description
Art Catalogue Index (A.C.I.) aims to provide a comprehensive list of all the catalogues raisonnés and reviews on artists born between 1780 and the postwar period. This first edition is focused on the so-called 'modern' period. It starts with the birth of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, in 1780 in Montauban, who competed for the Prix de Rome in 1800 with his contemporaries; he therefore both witnessed and took part in this turning point in time which opened the gates of the 'modern' period, and which led up to today and contemporary art. Published with BFAS, Geneva, and Thierry Meaudre, Paris. English text.
