Book Description
H.E. Bates's fifth collection is a sparkling body of work full of stories of childhood. Geoffrey West observed the collection overall as "bright with life, with individuals alive and interacting, and with the sweeping beauties of broad country backgrounds." Often cited as one of Bates's best stories, 'The Mill' relates the misfortune of a young girl in service. Bates was inspired by the daughter of a travelling greengrocer who called on his family: "It seemed to me a face moulded out of yellow clay: a face born to tragedy. I believe it is true that Hardy saw his Tess only once and ... from that fleeting experience, haunted also by a face, created his celebrated novel.” We get a glimpse into Bates's negative experiences of education in both 'Little Fish', where a boy observes his father, normally a man "terrifying everyone in spasms of half-theatrical anger" become, in the presence of a school administrator, furtive and apprehensive; and in 'Jonah and Bruno', a classroom tale involving an arrogant and dictatorial teacher, a rebellious smart-mouthed student, and the eventual humiliation of the teacher by an intervening soldier. Comic relief comes in the form of witty characterisation and dialogue in 'The Irishman', and in 'The Revelation', a charming tale where the young narrator observes the housekeeper giving an elderly Uncle Silas his weekly bath; between roasting "taters" and drinking wine, Silas relates his childhood follies, including the time he chased a young woman "across the meadow with my clothes under her arms," which leads to a tender twist in the tale.

Book Description
All the world over, people tell stories to express their deepest feelings about such things as what makes a "real" man or woman; what true love, courage, or any other virtue is; what the proper relationships are between people. Often groups of people widely separated by space or time will tell the same basic story, but with differences in the details that reveal much about a particular group's worldview. This book looks at differences in the telling of several common Hispanic folktales. James Taggart contrasts how two men—a Spaniard and an Aztec-speaking Mexican—tell such tales as "The Bear's Son." He explores how their stories present different ways of being a man in their respective cultures. Taggart's analysis contributes to a revision of Freud's theory of gender, which was heavily grounded in biological determinism. Taggart focuses instead on how fathers reproduce different forms of masculinity in their sons. In particular, he shows how fathers who care for their infant sons teach them a relational masculinity based on a connected view of human relationships. Thus, The Bear and His Sons will be important reading not only in anthropology and folklore, but also in the growing field of men's studies.

Book Description
BOHICA: Bend Over! Here It Comes Again Did you like reading "Chicken Soup for the Soul"? If you did, you are in for more insight and zeal for the tapestry of life as you read this remarkable book. Years ago, a Western tourist decided to visit the old monk who sat atop a Tibetan mountain. It took days of hard climbing to reach the summit where he would be permitted to ask one question of the old wise man. Gasping for breath in the thin atmosphere, he asked, "Master, what is the secret of true happiness?" The old man calmly answered as if he had heard the same question a million times. "Avoid becoming too involved in your own life?" BOHICA is this author's musings on an old saying, "Bend over! Here it comes again." Originally it referred to ducking beneath a swinging boom on a sailboat. The author has applied it to the cycle of events that are so common in our busy lives. Using wit and humor, you may well learn things in these pages that are very personal to your own life. Why? Because some of the stories are like mirrors that show us more about who we are as human beings. In BOHICA: Bend Over! Here It Comes Again, you will experience heart touching glimpses into the best and worst moments of life. These stories and reflections will soon cause you to explore what you really believe and why. Let's face it. Some of what we believe is ridiculous, but not until we put it into words or try to explain it to someone else. Your values are at the heart of your identity, so this book will help you discover something about who you really are - often with laughter but sometimes with sentimental tears. For example, there are some profound truths that only seem to emerge from those who have fallen into addiction and despair. Yet, there is some of the most hilarious joy that overflows from the journey out of that emotional prison. Sometimes, you can almost get a hernia from laughing at short, humorous thoughts that are just too close to the truth. Perhaps the ability to laugh at yourself is the most important step toward emotional wholeness and recovery from the traumatic circumstances of life.

Book Description
This collection of essays, documented by an international and interdisciplinary array of scholars, represents the first academically focused volume exploring the creative idiolect of Frank Zappa. Several of the authors are known for contributing significantly to areas such as popular music, cultural, and translation studies, with expertise and interests ranging from musicology to poetics. The publication presents the reader with an understanding of the ontological depth of Zappa's legacy by relating the artist and his texts to a range of cultural, social, technological and musicological factors, as encapsulated in the book's title - Frank Zappa and the And. Zappa's interface with religion, horror, death, movies, modernism, satire, freaks, technology, resistance, censorship and the avant-garde are brought together analytically for the first time, and approached non chronologically, something that strongly complies with the non linear perspective of time Zappa highlights in both his autobiography and recordings. The book employs a variety of analytical approaches, ranging from literary and performance theory, 'horrality' and musicology, to post modern and textually determined readings, and serves as a unique and invaluable guide to Zappa's legacy and creative force.
