Book Description
"From the late eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries a sweeping movement in architectural and decorative taste dominated Western cultures. Known collectively by the descriptive term "Revival Styles," this phenomenon, which left a rich visual legacy upon the cultural landscapes of many nations, exhibited three primary manifestations: Classical (chiefly Greek and Roman), Gothic (or Medieval), and Egyptian (or Near Eastern). In America, for a variety of reasons, a significantly large amount of the creative energy inherent in the Revival movement was directed towards the conception and erection of spectacular monuments and memorials to prominent Americans. Frequently designed and executed by the leading architects and sculptors of the day, the great majority of these strikingly beautiful artifacts and structures were placed in the large "rural" cemeteries of American cities developed in the middle decades of the nineteenth century, where they remain for future generations to analyze and admire. In this richly illustrated volume, art historian Peggy McDowell and folklorist Richard E. Meyer blend their respective disciplinary perspectives, along with their shared long-standing fascination with cemeteries and funerary material culture, to provide a thoroughgoing descriptive analysis of this dramatic chapter in the history of American memorial art."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Description
Awarded the Certificate of Commendation of the American Association for State and Local History In this collection of letters written by members of a prominent Maryland family on the eve of and during the Civil War, David Hein has found gold in the mine of his state's historical society. This book immerses the reader in civilian life as civil war approached, fiercely as a wind-driven wildfire-civilian life personified by the family of Allen Bowie Davis, a prosperous farmer-legislator from Montgomery County, north of Washington, D.C. These letters capture the complexity of the Civil War in a state of abolitionists, pro-slavery unionists, anti-slavery southern sympathizers, and non-slaveholding secessionists. We see a pivotal Maryland through the eyes of adults and children, and we witness the consequences of war for familial relationships, religious values, and educational institutions. David Hein's crisp editorial commentary knits these letters together, enabling the Davis family to tell of life in the tumultuous middle of the nineteenth century. We are in the debt of this book and its editor for reminding us that a history with leaders and battles is incomplete without the testimony of sons and daughters, of mothers and fathers. From the Foreword by Charles W. Mitchell, editor of Maryland Voices of the Civil War

Book Description
This handbook aims to be a guide to the best private schools of the country. It has been undertaken with the parent especially in mind, but it is hoped that it may be of value to school and college authorities and all others interested in the subject. It is believed that this Handbook is the first volume which attempts a critical and discriminating treatment of the private schools of the country. It is an endeavor to classify the schools on their merits -- at least a step, it is hoped, toward eventual standardization. - Editor's foreword.
