Christopher Chase-Dunn (in Balaam, 2005) Auf diese Art beschreibt Christopher Chase-Dunn kurz hegemoniale Zyklen und deren Anführer, den Hegemon. Nun stellt sich die Frage: Brauchen wir überhaupt einen Hegemon im internationalen System? Der Theorie nach ist dieser die Stütze des Systems. Aber kann sich die Stabilität nicht auch anderes halten? Diese hegemonialen Stabilität ist das Hauptthema der vorliegenden Arbeit. Hegemonie und Hegemoniezyklen sollen hier näher betrachtet werden. Als Beispiel wird die Rolle der USA und deren Traditionslinien und außenpolitischen Grundmuster erläutert werden. Die Arbeit wird sich aber weder mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der USA in dieser Rolle, noch mit deren kompletter Außenpolitik befassen. Die Hegemonie und vor allem die Frage ob ein Weltsystem noch einen Stabilisator benötigt, sind die hier verfolgten Kernpunkte. Im internationalen System soll hier von einem "Weltsystem" ausgegangen werden. Daher dient als Grundlage und zur Definition dieses Begriffes der Ansatz von Immanuel Wallerstein. Es soll dargestellt werden, ob und wenn ja welcher Zusammenhang zwischen Hegemonie und Krieg besteht und ob die These, dass ein Hegemon nur durch Kriege abgelöst werden kann, heute noch immer gilt. Auch unter Berücksichtigung der Globalisierung und wachsenden Konflikten durch den internationalen Terrorismus ein stabilisierendes Element wie der Hegemon noch notwendig ist.
