Excerpt from Suggestions for a Program for Health Teaching: In the Elementary Schools Probably no field of education within the last two years has shown more originality and vitality than that of health education. Experiments have been made not only by individual teachers but by groups of teachers on a large scale. In the midst of such interesting developments the need of a sound program of health education extending through the grades has become insistent. In this pioneer field certain ideals, principles, and methods have earned merited approval, but the work done has been limited to particular problems. Every serious student of the health situation feels this keenly, but the time is not yet ripe for a definite and complete course of study in health teaching. The whole field is still in a somewhat uncertain state, Educators in general have lost faith in the old-fashioned methods. This pamphlet is presented merely as a sane basis for wider experimentation. It attempts - 1. To define the goals for an effective program of health education in the schools. 2. To analyze the various factors of school and community that form an integral part of this program, such as board of health, school physician, family physician, school and family dentist, school nurse, teachers, and parents, and the contribution that each, if properly cooperating, may be expected to offer. 3. To outline in a general way the school health activities and the methods of teaching that may prove successful. While the cooperation of clubs and various organizations with the school is desirable, it can not be made too emphatic that school programs must emanate from the school itself. Any other policy is doomed almost inevitably to failure. School people are likely to resent "meddling with the schools." Excerpt from Minimum Health and Sanitation Standards in Schools Inasmuch as the union movement among teachers is characterized by a growing desire on the part of teachers to improve the conditions under which the work of teaching is carried on, the Teachers Union decided to go ahead with its plans. Accordingly, it was decided by the Union that the President should resign his position as teacher in a high school. The resignation was accepted January 3, 1921. The letter of resignation dated December 14, 1920, contains this statement quoted here to indicate the scope of the inquiry proposed: Among the conditions inquired into should be the following: The physical conditions, the conditions relative to ad ministration, the conditions relating to teaching. In addition, I believe it is important that studies be made of the quality of our ideals in relation to the prevailing schools of educational thought. In this connection, we should know the source of the moral, the' social, the civic and the professional inspiration of our teachers. The study of these conditions in relation to the product as shown in the output of our schools and in the quality of our citizenship should give us important leads for fundamental changes.
