Book Description
Excerpt from Harvard Medical Alumni Bulletin, Vol. 6: January, 1932 As to the prevention of the disease by attempts to check the spread of the virus, there is, I think, in view of the epidemio logic evidence for widespread distribution of the virus, not a cheerful prospect along the lines of isolation and quarantine of cases or of the as yet undetectable carriers. This, of course, does not mean that such measures should not be employed, wherever possible, as individual prophylaxis. Book Description
Excerpt from Harvard Medical Alumni Bulletin, Vol. 14: October 1939 With delight in a subject so sound and a theme so substantial let me turn your attention to the relationships of hospital to medical school. Even in an America where we are prone to overorganize everything - where Will Rogers used to say an American is ready to join anything but his family - there are, despite our tend ency to over-organization, working human relationships which are essentially simple and direct. Book Description
Excerpt from Harvard Medical Alumni Bulletin, Vol. 15: October, 1940 Exchange Professor, Peiping University Medi cal College, 1938. How sweet the summer! And the autumn shone Late warmth within our hearts as in the sky, Ripening rich harvests that our love had sown. How good that 'ere the winter comes, I die! Then, ageless, in your heart I'll come to rest Serene and proud, as when you loved me best. Lewis Mumford** has well said of man That which alone endures on earth is the Spirit in which he understands and meets his fate. This he passes on to his children and his comrades: only a breath indeed, but the breath of life. Hans Zinsser bequeathed the Breath of Life to his family, his students, his readers, and his friends. Book Description
Excerpt from Harvard Medical Alumni Bulletin, Vol. 17: June, 1943 The main function of the School is of course to do its share to meet the continuous demand of the country to supply adequately trained doc tors. Dr. Burwell felt happy to announce that the student body has remained up to standard in number and quality. These young men have had an arduous time: they have not only extra work and shortened vacations but they have had to meet a good deal of uncertainty. The wheels of the army-navy plan for them have at last started: about 90 per cent will soon be in the uniform of either the Army or the Navy. About August, 1942, the decision was reached bv the Man-power Commission that able-bodied men at or above the age of 18 should be in the armed forces, and that education should continue. Thence arose the present system or' Specialized Training Corps, in which the great majority of medical students will be. Strenuous efforts are being made to maintain the quality of the men entering the School, for on this one thing more than any other depends its future success.
