Handicapped Married Couples
Author: Ann Craft
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000894347
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 161
Book Description
Despite handicaps of low mental ability, deprived backgrounds or psychiatric and physical disability, most married couples with disabilities manage to give and receive much personal satisfaction and pleasure in their marriages. This is of special interest to professionals and social workers, who in the course of their jobs are called upon to give support and service to people with mental disabilities. Originally published in 1979 Ann and Michael Craft had spent four years researching a sample of 45 marriages with at least one spouse with a mental disability. In three-quarters of the partnerships both spouses have a mental disability. This was the largest group of married subjects with a mental disability studied in this country at the time, and the Crafts’ conclusions were of considerable importance, for, with the recent trend towards normalization, marriage was becoming a viable possibility for more and more people with mental disabilities. The purposes of the study, therefore, were to give an account of the authors’ research concerning married couples with mental disabilities, to suggest some ways in which service to such couples might be improved, and to provide material for teaching purposes. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1979. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

God's Immeasurable Grace. It's the most important ingredient for the perfect love story. Tragic circumstances often stretch relationships to their breaking point. But God's grace is always more than enough. For Ken and Joni Eareckson Tada, enduring quadriplegia, chronic pain, cancer, and depression only made their love more vibrant through thirty years of marriage. Discover a bond that has seen the worst and claimed the best. With sixteen pages of photos, peek into Joni and Ken’s challenges firsthand. Discover God's immeasurable grace along the way, as their story inspires and enriches your own relationships. A love untold. Until now. Ken underestimated the challenges of marrying a woman with quadriplegia. Even the honeymoon wasn't easy. Through their years together, Ken becomes increasingly overwhelmed by the unceasing demands of caring for a woman with chronic, extreme, nightmarish pain. He sinks into depression. Though living under the same roof, they drift apart. In the midst of their deepest struggles with depression and pain, Ken and Joni return to the one true answer to their struggles. One that is far from a denial of Joni's diagnosis or thoughts of how wonderful a quick exit to heaven would be. In their darkest hour, Ken and Joni encounter a heavenly visitation that changes their lives--and maybe yours too--forever.

Enabling Acts
Author: Lennard J. Davis
Publisher: Beacon Press
ISBN: 0807071579
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
The first major behind-the-scenes account of the history, passage, and impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—the landmark moment for disability rights The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the widest-ranging and most comprehensive piece of civil rights legislation ever passed in the United States, and it has become the model for disability-based laws around the world. Yet the surprising story behind how the bill came to be is little known. In this riveting account, acclaimed disability scholar Lennard J. Davis delivers the first on-the-ground narrative of how a band of leftist Berkeley hippies managed to make an alliance with upper-crust, conservative Republicans to bring about a truly bipartisan bill. Based on extensive interviews with all the major players involved including legislators and activists, Davis recreates the dramatic tension of a story that is anything but a dry account of bills and speeches. Rather, it’s filled with one indefatigable character after another, culminating in explosive moments when the hidden army of the disability community stages scenes like the iconic “Capitol Crawl” or an event when students stormed Gallaudet University demanding a “Deaf President Now!” From inside the offices of newly formed disability groups to secret breakfast meetings surreptitiously held outside the White House grounds, here we meet countless unsung characters, including political heavyweights and disability advocates on the front lines. “You want to fight?” an angered Ted Kennedy would shout in an upstairs room at the Capitol while negotiating the final details of the ADA. Congressman Tony Coelho, whose parents once thought him to be possessed by the devil because of his epilepsy, later became the bill’s primary sponsor. There’s Justin Dart, adorned in disability power buttons and his signature cowboy hat, who took to the road canvassing 50 states, and people like Patrisha Wright, also known as “The General,” Arlene Myerson or “the brains,” “architect” Bob Funk, and visionary Mary Lou Breslin, who left the hippie highlands of the West to pursue equal rights in the marble halls of DC.
