Book Description
It is no longer acceptable for utility engineers to make spending decisions solely because they make good engineering sense. In today’s environment, they must also demonstrate solid business acumen and show that recommendations make good business sense. With this goal in mind, Business Essentials for Utility Engineers systematically presents each business topic to arm engineers with the tools and vocabulary necessary to be more effective when interacting with senior management, and for promotion to senior management. This book covers all business concepts important to utility engineers, including regulation, ratemaking, accounting, finance, risk management, economics, budgeting, and asset management. The author applies his vast corporate experience to give readers a solid foundation for business theory, discussing the idiosyncrasies of utilities and using advanced mathematics to demonstrate business concepts. He also explains how to properly apply this theory to utilities, expounding on specific business skills that will greatly benefit utility engineers in their daily jobs. Chapters are organized to build sequentially upon each other, and take advantage of the mathematical sophistication and deductive nature of engineers when presenting material. After reading this book, utility engineers will view their industry from a new perspective, and will have a greatly expanded business vocabulary. Suitable for self-study, undergraduate study, graduate study, or as a desk reference, this book provides a robust framework for correct business thinking and a solid foundation for further learning. Book Description
This is a best practice manual for addressing water losses in water distribution networks worldwide. Systems and methodologies are presented for improving water loss and leakage management in a range of networks, from systems with a well-developed infrastructure to those in developing countries where the network may need to be upgraded. The key feature of the manual is a diagnostic approach to develop a water loss strategy - using the appropriate tools to find the right solutions - which can be applied to any network. The methods of assessing the scale and volume of water loss are outlined, together with the procedures for setting up leakage monitoring and detection systems. As well as real losses (leakage) procedures for addressing apparent losses, by introducing regulatory and customer metering policies are explained. Suggestions are made for demand management and water conservation programmes, to complement the water loss strategy. Recommendations are made for training workshops and operation and maintenance programmes to ensure skills transfer and sustainability. The manual is illustrated throughout with case studies. Losses in Water Distribution Networks will appeal to a wide range of practitioners responsible for designing and managing a water loss strategy. These include consultants, operations managers, engineers, technicians and operational staff. It will also be a valuable reference for senior managers and decision makers, who may require an overview of the principles and procedures for controlling losses. The book will also be suitable as a source document for courses in Water Engineering, Resource Management and Environmental Management.

Book Description
Following a historic look at the dominant business models of the utilities industry, we look at the factors impacting the industry today, "the three D's: decentralization, decarbonization and digitization". Decentralization describes what is happening, decarbonization describes why, and digitization helps explain how. To this, we add a fourth D: financial decline. After considering the impact of these factors, we look to the future. The book examines business model transformation through the study of an industry at the center of today's efforts to combat climate change: electrical utilities. When change comes to be the dominant business model of a mature industry, the pattern of change often occurs in recognizable ways. Often, radical change will occur in one element of an industry's business model, forcing a period of disruption, followed by innovation in other aspects of the business model as it adjusts to the new competitive environment. Following a historic look at the dominant utility business models and how we got to where we are, we look at how technology and climate change are impacting the industry today and "the three D's: decentralization, decarbonization and digitization". Although clichéd, the term is a useful framework to describe the big drivers of change moving through the industry. Decentralization describes what is happening, decarbonization describes why, and digitization helps explain how. To this, we add a fourth phenomenon striking at the financial stability of many utilities: financial decline. After considering the impact of these factors, we look to the future. Part 1 introduces the concept of business model transformation in mature firms. Part 2 describes the history of utility business model transformation from the 1880's. Part 3 illustrates stresses of decarbonization and technology on today's utility model. Part 4 describes the roadblocks to change encountered by mature firms, and strategies to bypass them. The basis of this book is research completed for a Doctoral dissertation completed and defended in 2019.
