Excerpt from Handbook to the Prince Consort National Memorial: Published by Authority of the Executive Committee First, That this meeting, deeply deploring the irre parable loss the country has sustained by the lamented death of his Royal Highness the Prince Consort, whose powerful and well - regulated mind and great abilities have for more than twenty years been unceasingly de voted to improving the condition of the humbler classes, to the development and extension of science and art, and to the judicious education and training of the Royal Family, is of Opinion that a lasting Memorial should be erected commemorative of his many virtues and expres Sive of the gratitude of the people. Secondly, That the Memorial recommended should be of a monumental and national character, and that its_ design and mode of execution be approved by Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen. And, Thirdly, That Committees Should be formed out the United Kingdom to raise subscription proposed Memorial, and that Her Majesty's should be invited to subscribe.
