Book Description
Intended for volunteers in community literacy programs, one-on-one tutors, or parents who want to support classroom learning, this book presents tutoring ideas, teaching activities, and evaluation suggestions. The book guides tutors as they teach students to become independent learners and shows tutors how to provide support but not "do" the work for students. The book also offers advice to tutors in adjusting their role and establishing positive working relationships with learners. Chapters in the book are: (1) "Practical Tips for Volunteer Tutors" (Judy Nichols Mitchell); (2) "Effective Literacy Instruction" (Beverly Griffin Cox and Joy Garton Krueger); (3) "Building Characteristics of Successful Readers and Writers" (Beth Ann Herrmann and others); (4) "Helping Learners Complete Assigned Work" (Jeanne Shay Schumm and Kathleen A. Hinchman); (5) "Effective Literacy Assessment" (Jeri Sarracino and others); and (6) "Where To Go When You Need More Help" (Bird B. Stasz and Bob Schlagal). An afterword called "Some Final Thoughts about Literacy and Tutoring" (Bird B. Stasz) concludes the document. (RS)

Book Description
This manual is based on the concept that group based conversational opportunity for newly arrived refugees using volunteer facilitators could be replicated. Talk Time programs flourish in different settings. Most commonly, a volunteer ESL tutor program decides to add a Talk Time component to its existing services. However, sometimes the need to start a Talk Time program emerges from another type of organization or the community. For example, some classroom based adult education programs have decided to begin a Talk Time with volunteers on campus as a supplement for the ESL classes.

Book Description
This handbook is designed to provide guidance particularly to inexperienced coordinators of adult literacy volunteer tutor programs or to those isolated from support personnel or structures. It is not a curriculum to be followed from beginning to end, but a selection of materials from all states in Australia. Each section contains references and illustrative examples placed throughout the text, together with their sources. Section 1 is an introduction with chapters on how to use the handbook, the place of volunteers in the development of adult literacy and basic education in Australia, and underlying principles. The five chapters in section 2 deal with management of volunteer tutor programs: volunteer tutor programs, program management, management structure models, areas of program management, and program development. Section 3 on working with volunteer tutors contains chapters on the following: policies and practices for volunteers; recruitment, selection, and training of volunteer tutors; tutor training programs; and ongoing training, support, and evaluation. Appendixes are as follows: state volunteer centers around Australia; volunteers' rights and responsibilities; selection and appointment of volunteers; criteria for selecting tutors; tutor application form; names and addresses of professional support agencies; list of bookshops and suppliers of resource materials; annotated list of 32 articles from "Good Practice in Australian Adult Literacy and Basic Education"; and acronyms. Contains a bibliography listing 54 items. (YLB)
